Mazda 2-based CX-3 crossover “fully feasible” – report

It seems the B-segment SUV really is the bandwagon to jump on now, and Mazda could be next. Rumours of a possible ‘CX-3’ have been floating around the international scene for some time, and even closer to home, a research report on Berjaya Auto has made mention of a “high-volume B-segment SUV” called the CX-3.

To date, such a model has never been officially confirmed, but in an interview given to motoring.com.au, Seita Kanai, who is set to become Mazda Motor Corp chairman on July 1, said that an SUV based on the next-gen Mazda 2 is within the scope of the carmaker’s model range framework, and is “fully feasible.”

The report speculates that the ‘CX-3’ could be revealed before the year ends, along with the new MX-5 and CX-9. The new MX-5’s SkyActiv engine (mounted longitudinally, no less!) and chassis were shown at the New York show in April, while the new CX-9 is expected to drop the big V6 for – as is so often the case these days – a smaller four-cylinder turbo engine.

B-segment SUVs are things like the Peugeot 2008, Ford EcoSport, Nissan Juke, Renault Captur, Opel/Vauxhall Mokka, Chevrolet/Holden Trax, Jeep Renegade and Honda HR-V/Vezel. Concepts which may or may not come to fruition include the Citroen C-XR, Hyundai ix25, Volkswagen Taigun and Kia Niro.

    Mazda 2 = Mazda CX-3 car-based SUV
    Mazda 3 = Mazda CX-5 car-based SUV
    Mazda 6 = Mazda CX-9 car-based SUV

and then Mazda should make a truck based 7 seater SUV for the ASEAN market. To battle the Everest, Fortuner, Pajero Sport. It must use the CX-7 nameplate.

CX-5 = CX-7 <– pricing should be close much like the RAV4 and Fortuner have close pricing.
