MINI has just announced two more engine variants for the F56 three-door hatch range. Forming the base of the model family is the new MINI One First, which slots in below the MINI One, while the MINI Cooper SD sits at the top of the diesel range, alongside the petrol-powered Cooper S.
The entry-level F56 MINI One First gets a new detuned version of the standard One’s 1.2 litre three-cylinder petrol engine. The MINI TwinPower Turbo unit employs direct injection and double-VANOS (variable intake and exhaust timing) technologies, and offer 75 hp and 150 Nm of torque, the latter as low as 1,400 rpm.
Getting from 0-100 km/h takes a lengthy 12.8 seconds, while it averages as low as 5.0 litres per 100 km. That compares unfavourably next to the One’s 102 hp/180 Nm outputs, 9.9 second 0-100 km/h time and 4.6 l/100 km average. On the flipside, that makes it a natural successor to the previous-gen MINI One (98 hp/150 Nm, 0-100 km/h in 12.3 seconds, 6.7 l/100 km).
On the outside, the MINI One First should be similar to the One (pictured here), with reflector headlights, high-gloss black radiator grille ribs and black bumper strip, tailgate handle and wing mirrors. It was first announced with 15-inch steel wheels with covers, though the One seen here is fitted with optional alloy wheels.
The F56 MINI Cooper SD, meanwhile, uses the brand’s most powerful diesel engine to date – a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder MINI TwinPower Turbo motor with 170 hp and 360 Nm of torque. Fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission, it gets to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds (manual is 0.1 second slower) while consuming just 4.0 l/100 km.
With these additions, the F56 MINI hatch range now has seven engine variants (four petrol and three diesel) – none of which are carried over from the outgoing model. Here in Malaysia, the three-door hatchback is offered in Cooper and Cooper S forms, with prices starting from RM178,888. The MINI One or One First? You’ll know when we do.

as an owner of mini, the only nice design in the new fleet of minis is the Superleggera Vision.Sadly enough its a concept.honestly think the previous mini design is better.2 cents.peace.
many improvements to the fuel efficiency, while the diesel variant has very impressive performance.
sure no manual transmission option as usual… lame
Impressive FC.. impressive price too.. sky high to the moon..
Anyone interested?
Not me..at this size.. never.
Good luck sales.
Not everyone needs size. Otherwise everyone would be driving a van or a bus or a trailer. No wonder you’re still a katak in your green katak myvi. Never understood the market demand.
Was eyeing for a Mini but the reviews all over the world were not convincing. Poor reliability. Even my housemate who owns one said so. What a pity. Just the right size of car for me.
The 3rd Generation shares the same platform with the small BMWs, so its unreasonable to compare those with earlier generations. Service intervalls are set at 30k km now.
No one complains that it is underpowered? 75 hp in a premium B segment hatchback?
Its underpowered as its the smallest engine to choose. Keep in mind that the F56 Cooper delivers almost the same torq as a first generation S line so it´s a huge improvement in power and fuel economy if you go for the mid range engines.
