Lexus Malaysia has launched its first Lexus 3S centre in East Malaysia, and it’s in Sarawak – Lexus Kuching, which is operated by Boulevard Jaya, is located at Lot 872 & 873, Block 16, KCLD, Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli.
The five-storey facility, which has a showroom capable of displaying up to seven vehicles as well as a service centre and spare parts unit, joins the Lexus 3S centres in Mutiara Damansara, Penang, Johor Bahru and Sungai Besi; there’s also a showroom in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.
Lexus Malaysia has invested RM 50 million as part of its network expansion in the country, and the brand is set to open two further outlets in Ipoh and Malacca by the third quarter of this year.To date, Lexus Malaysia has sold more than 6,000 Lexus vehicles in the country, and the company is targeting to sell more than 1,400 Lexus models this year.

UMW clearly hasn’t been doing market research. If they have taken a look at the Malaysian market carefully, they should know that the next state they should open their next 3S centre is Sabah. Lexus vehicles are everywhere! Their market share is clearly way ahead of the Germans.
The grey importers are doing a much better job in bringing in new Lexus models.
setting up lexus outlet in sabah is comitting suicide for umw or its dealers.
japanese used imports are a lot cheaper there, and the sabahans do not bother much. they are after all truthfully loyal to toyota brand for generations.

you want to know why? UMW is owned by Permodalan Nasional Berhad – which is the government investment arm. it is therefore necessary. and bcoz of the same UMW will not die – trust me.
I seriously do not understand why Lexus ES250 can command such high price in comparison to Peugeot 508 Premium.
Features for features and performance for performance, the 508 nudges ES 250 a bit but heck Lexus is RM 260K (Min) and 508 premium is only 170K. I am truly amazed why people can choose the Lexus 250 in Malaysia.
UMW has done their market research before opening Lexus showroom in Sarawak. They know the sales of Toyota and Lexus in every state. qwerty, if you have done your homework properly, the sales of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Sabah never exceed Sarawak despite having higher population than Sarawak. In fact, Lexus cars was already easily seen on streets of Sarawakian cities and towns few years ago. Just compare the GDP and economic growth of cities and towns of Sarawak and Sabah and it’s very obvious which state is a more prosperous state.
Whether they open in Sarawak or Sabah does not really matter. They will not sell in significant numbers compared to the German marques. The author mentioned they have sold 6,000 units so far, in 8 years?? That translates to 700 over units a year or around 60 over units a month.
To start off with, Lexus has priced themselves out of the Malaysian market. They have adopted a gung-ho approach by pricing their cars the same level as the more established germans, which would not work. We all know Lexus are good quality cars, but not excellent products. Most people even view them as only upmarket Toyotas. In my opinion, if Lexus had priced themselves 20-25% cheaper than the equivalent Germans, and equipped their cars with more kit at the same time, they would stand a better chance.
To add further, the Japanese seem to lag behind the Germans in terms of engine technology these days. I mean, who would choose a 2.5 litre N/A engine over the advance direct injection turbocharged petrol engines the Germans offer, unless the person knows very little about engine performance.
If you add all these up, you would find choosing Lexus quite an unattractive choice.

Lexus is no Mercedes or BMW in terms of design and driver experience, that is true. But there is a market for Lexus in Sabah as a more discreet and more reliable luxury car. I predict Lexus will open a shop in Kota Kinabalu within a year or two.
