Mercedes-AMG GT to debut new AMG M178 turbocharged V8 – 510 horsepower, 650 Nm

We’ve heard strong rumours of this for quite some time now, but Mercedes-Benz’s AMG division have finally announced their latest creation – a 4.0 litre twin-turbocharged V8, which will make its debut in the new C190 Mercedes-AMG GT sports car set to be unveiled later this year.

The 3,982cc dry sump engine’s V bank is separate at a 90 degree angle, and the two turbochargers sit within the V bank to keep the engine compact. The boosted air is cooled via water-to-air intercoolers.

The engine features flow-optimized cylinder heads with zirconium alloy for thermal conductivity. It also has lightweight forged pistons with a high strength and a low-friction piston ring package. The crankcase is produced using sand casting technology and features a closed deck design which enables high injection pressures of up to 140 bar.

Peak output is 510 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 650 Nm of torque between 1,750-4,750 rpm. Compression ratio is 10.5:1 while the boost pressure is 1.2 bar, which seems relatively low compared to the A 45 AMG‘s 1.8 bar. The horsepower to displacement ratio is lower as well.

This means this motor probably isn’t quite near its limit yet – expect higher output figures in the future, especially since the engine has to at least match the outgoing AMG 5.5 litre V8’s 585 hp and 800 Nm peak.

For comparison’s sake, BMW’s equivalent 4.4 litre twin-turbo V8 – with the turbos in the V-bank just like this AMG motor – does 560 hp and 680 Nm of torque.

At this level, v8 is lame, we need something like V10.
