2014 Mitsubishi Triton – toned down Concept GR-HEV

Mitsubishi-GR-HEV-05

Hot on the tail of Nissan’s new NP300 Navara pick-up truck that was unveiled earlier this month is Mitsubishi’s next-generation Triton, which is set to get a global debut the next few months. Here’s a first look at the new Triton, pics of which were leaked onto a Thai pick-up truck enthusiast forum over the weekend.

Many of the design cues are taken from the Mitsubishi Concept GR-HEV truck that was shown at the 2013 Bangkok Motor Show, although the production car looks a lot tamer than the concept. The front end is dominated by lots of chrome arranged as vertical bars in the front grille.

MMC and Nissan originally planned to co-develop this Triton and the recently-launched Navara, but Nissan product planning chief Andy Palmer told paultan.org last week that the project did not pass feasibility studies and both parties decided to continue developing their pick-up offering separately. More on the divorce here.

Now that you’ve had a sneak peek at the Mitsubishi, which do you prefer – new Triton or new Navara?

While the new Triton doesn’t seem very groundbreaking in the looks department, I think whether it is better looking that the Navara is up for debate. I think the Navara looks a bit like a Ford Ranger given a Nissan touch and more bling. The headlamp assembly and the basic grille arrangement both look quite similar, no?

I’m nt a fan of putting so much chrome on trucks like da dmax or the recently launched navara..it takes away alot of their macho-ness which is da same reason alot of ppl buy these in da 1st place…
nt expecting anyting ground breaking anyway…

mitsubishi have alot less resources than other competitors,n judging by their recent products or lack of,thy seem lost n drowning in a big deep sea

I don’t think everyone equates chrome = lack of macho-ness. Don’t let the bikers hear you say that. ;)

This car seems to have a more aerodynamic front-end compared to the Navara, the latter of which I think looks a bit similar to the out-going Ford Ranger in its headlight and basic grille design. This one looks a bit more special, imo. They have yet to fully dress up the car as you can see a lack of fog lamp surround, the missing grille for the lower air intake and the rear Mitsubishi logo. I think they’re also going to do something about the Mitsubishi logo on the front grille as it’s just unacceptable to just leave it as it is; I had to look carefully for the logo!

It is true that Mitsubishi has a lot less resources than other competitors. I guess that is why they are focusing on their mainstay products. They simply cannot afford to develop as many products as they used to. The Triton is a big deal for them: one of their volume sellers. I am certain that they’re pumping a respectable amount of their available resources into it.

What I’m saying is, don’t be too quick to judge as we don’t know in what state this product is in. We don’t even know of its mechanicals.

well..this is such a letdown. i planned to wait for the new Triton for my Myvi replacement. But judging from the pics, this is such a huge blow that i couldn’t even express my disappointment. Looks like its Nissan Navara for me then. ETCM please bring it to Malaysia ASAP!

I wonder how they’re going to accentuate the Mitsubishi logo on that chrome grille. It looks so lost in that chrome that you really can’t see it that clearly. And they have yet to install the rear logo.

At least there’s a reverse camera now. Hopefully as standard.

  • Looking at those pictures, it seems the new Triton won’t be much wider (good, as it won’t be a hassle to manuever and park). The cabin seems to retain the unique swoop-up shape as well. The grille looks aftermarket and uh, so shiny.

No ‘leaked’ news on the powertrain suggests that the current lineup of engines will probably soldier on, at least for the first few years after launch. Anyways, Triton is an important model for Mitsu now so hope they will get it right.

  • it’s a Pickup Lorry for 2015 – 2025.

Why dont they used the concept??
Current Generation probably looks more futuristic than this. seems like moving backward.

i suspect this is the lower end version. but the rear got reverse cam! haha…and notice the fog/spotlight area, seems like some more stupid “chrome” is gonna be installed around the fog lamp.

It can sell with the following is given:

    1. 30% fuel consumption improvement.
    2. 30% power/torque improvement.

I’m not a fan of pickups and probably wouldnt own one.. but i have to say, if this is the end product, then it’s a big letdown… like Subaru WRX concept and the end product. It’s nowhere near the concept. Not only that, it barely bears any significant outstanding features. It’s more like a facelift. On the other hand, the concept looks amazing and is sure to grab a big chunk of market share if is makes it to production.

I prefer the looks of this over the Narava so it’ll be interesting to see what Mitsu will put into the spec sheet to rival the Navara

Most of the new generation track (isuzu/navara/ford/madza/mitsu) still not able to beat the Hilux in term of sale. They can put a high power engine and nice dashboard and neglected the interior space for urban cowboy.

Hilux is still the king in malaysia if this bunch of designer still not able to come out with some innovative design for urban Cowboy’s truck that need a big interior like D segment Car for family comfort.

I am ex-Hilux owner for 3 years and still looking for a family truck. But unfortunatly till today, just cant see any truck with a big interior despite their improvement on the dash board with big horse power engine.

The car designer still sleeping with their job if they are not able the beat the 10 old Toyota Hilux interior space.

They lack of innovative. A good designer should be able to know the urban cowboy’s truck that should have a longer legroom at the rear (like D segment car and an additonal 300mm internal storage area for bag instead of putting bag at the open cargo area).

A 2.5 cab design will be perfect and reduce the open cargo space to 600mm length. (urban cowboy dont need a open cargo)

An innovative Designer that able to produce the big interior (D segment) will beat the Toyota Hilux in term of engine refinement and safety features and sedan car dash board.

Toyota Hilux got no threat from year 2014/15 from new Navara/Triton/izusu in malaysia and they still can enjoy the brisk sale without any improvement of the engine and dash board.

T Hilux always know what the Urban cowboy requirement. And those stupid designer make the Toyota Hilux No : 1 in Malaysia.

The Triton concept looks so sexy – and the production model seems to be now so dull. Why «cheat» so many manufactures with their concept cars?

Mazda seems to be an exception, but a new BT-50 is probably many years away…
