Mazda MX-5 – next-gen roadster to debut in September

On September 4, Mazda will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of its iconic front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car, the Mazda MX-5, at the Mazda Roadster Thanks Day in Chiba, Japan. This will be a big day for fans across the world, and for a very good reason – it’s when the fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 will be revealed. The car will also be revealed simultaneously in Spain and the United States.

As previously reported, the new roadster will be the the first to be built with the company’s SkyActiv technology, including the use of SkyActiv powertrains. It will feature “the most compact configuration yet” with a more centrally-positioned engine and a centre of gravity lower than ever before.

Mazda is aiming to shave more than 100 kg off the MX-5 with the new car, despite featuring “outstanding rigidity and crashworthiness.” The backbone chassis, including the engine, drivetrain and suspension components, was shown at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) earlier this year.

As of May 31, Mazda has moved nearly 945,000 MX5s since 1989, clinching the Guinness World Record for the bestselling two-seater sports car of all time in the process.

Bermaz already screws current model of Mazda MX-5 with only automatic transmission. I feel that when the next generation of MX-5 comes to shore, Bermaz still continue to screw us with only automactic transmission.

For those prefer manual transmission of MX-5, they are forced to get recon MX-5 (saw a few on the street).

their biggest market where most of the ride sold to is north america. Here got, but all hidden dragons. Having said that, even thailand has more mx5 than us I think. Here I think for NA, not more than 150, NB lagi sikit, NC not too sure but I see increasingly more owners now.

  • They better make sure that the oil temp is working and not the “dummy” ones.

Unfortunately, in Bolehland, the car is priced around the Merc A-Class.. And that is why I bought a Proton Saga FLX.

Front engine with almost the entire thing behind the front axle, check. Gearbox almost in the middle of the car, check. Rear wheel drive, check. Small & light weight? Not sure can check yet. But still, recipe for fun at “affordable” price!

Engine looks in-line 4 cylinder. Could it be a tuned up 2.0 engine from Mazda 6/3? If they’d give it a flat 4 like Toyota 86/Subaru BRZ, then it would have even lower centre of gravity. Can’t wait for a comparo of these cars, and also the upcoming Honda sports car aka mini new NSX.

“affordable” does not apply to Malaysia. lol

In all likelihood, it’ll be a SkyActiv engine under the hood. A 2.5? Or the 2.0? Maybe even a 2.2 Diesel for countries that have good enough diesel?

This should be good. Unfortunately the current MX-5 in Bolehland is a bit of a rare sight. Wonder if they will bring in this one. Hmmm…

    • No turbo needed. Driven the N/A 6 speed NB and it was awesome.

There seems to be the sound of a turbocharger in the video.
