Proton Design Competition 2014 – a quick guide on entry formats and submissions

Proton Design Comp Logo Finale

Budding designers are no doubt busy working on their Proton Design Competition 2014 entries, envisioning their idea of what a Proton city car of 2020 should look like. Earlier in the week, we took a closer look at the automaker’s previous concepts.

There’s still more than a month to go before the closing of submissions – all entries have to be received by Proton by 11.59 pm, August 11, but apparently there have been questions fielded to the automaker by participants on how best to make their submissions and about usable formats.

UPDATE: The Proton Design Competition 2014 closing date has been extended by a week, from August 11 to August 18.

All the details you need to know are outlined in the ‘Entry Format’ section of the Terms & Conditions part of the contest section on Proton’s Facebook page, but to make it easier for you, here’s an outline of the important points to remember:

  • The contest is divided into two categories – Category 1, for individuals within the ages of 13-17 and Category 2, for individuals within the ages of 18-25.
  • Please note that group entries are not allowed, and only Malaysians with a valid Malaysian identity card can take part.
  • The vehicle must have a minimum of five passenger seats.
  • All entries are required to feature renderings of an exterior outlook of the car – front 3/4 view, side view and rear 3/4 view. Category 2 (18-25 yr old) participants MUST also design an interior for their concept – be creative here.
  • Renderings may be done using either digital media (CAD or graphics editing software such as Adobe Photoshop) or traditional media (pen, pencil, marker on paper).
  • Traditional media renderings may be done on normal drawing paper, but MUST be sized in A3 (tabloid) sheet format, measuring within 270 mm to 300 mm by 420 mm to 450 mm.
  • The rendering sketches MUST be coloured illustrations, using any artistic medium.
  • The entries must NOT be sent pasted onto mounting board, or with binding.
  • An entry must be of an original design relating to the theme of the competition, and not previously published work or a design that has been submitted for other competitions. The latter will result in disqualification.
  • All entries MUST be accompanied by a design brief of the concept, on A4 paper (Arial font, 12 pt., 1.3” spacing) and must include:
    – The name of the design
    – Design concept (describe the idea behind the design)
    – Unique selling proposition of the car (what are the unique elements)
    – Propose the engine system of the car (how will it be powered?)
  • All competition forms, except for those submitted online, must be posted by ordinary mail, with stamp(s) amounting to value of RM 1 or more. Forms submitted with stamp(s) lesser than RM 1 value will be rejected.
  • Forms which are incomplete, difficult to read or spoilt in one form or another will be rejected and will be treated as disqualified entries. Proton has the final say in determining the eligibility of the competition forms.

    • Proton boleh lumpuh jika tiada langkah lindungi industri automotif – Tun M
      Berita Harian, 2014/04/30

BEKAS Perdana Menteri, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad melancarkan buku berjudul The United Nation (UN) Chronicle tulisan Tan Sri Rozali Ismail (kanan) dan Sharifah Shifa al-Attas di Institut Diplomasi dan Hubungan Luar Negeri (IDFR) di Kuala Lumpur, hari ini. Buku berkenaan mencatatkan pengalaman dan peranan Malaysia berkaitan isu dunia ketika Tan Sri Rozali Ismail menjadi wakil tetap di Pertubuhan Bangsa Bangsa Bersatu di New York dari 1988 hingga 1998. – Foto Yazit Razali

– BERNAMA

You think Proton really keen on designs from the teen? Haha, it is just the marketing strategy.

They know they can’t attract current buyers group which are usually 25 years old and above. So they target the future buyer.

But design contest? Doesn’t it sounds naive?

I think they better give a RM 10k discount voucher to all the Malaysian teens – the vouchers to be valid from 2020 only and must be used the teen him/herself. Even easier and faster.

Or force all Malaysian house developers to launch “buy one unit free one proton” promotion from now on. You want proton or not, no further discount.

There are many ways to sell the cars since you have the best support the nation named “perlindungan”.

=> Orang memang nak maju tapi Proton dalam mulut je nak maju nak improve – tapi tiap-tiap tahun sama je.
=>=> PROTON is improving with current model such as Preve and Suprima plus latest GSC. After the jumbuck got 1 star ANCAP, PROTON had design all new car with best safety feature according to the price. The macpherson struts Ride & Handling one of the best with cheaper price.

Mr. ioma you like to condemn PROTON, do u hav balls to come to COE and test drive PROTON cars. U have the experience driving Preve and Suprima and feel the R&H MacPherson struts cornering 140kmh w/o brake. Don’t talk City or Vios, you test Civic and Altis cornering the same speed. I believe they’re targeting a certain generation of people (for e.g. Generation Y or X) to have a glimpse into their minds of what the concept of a car will be like for them. I believe they’re trying to design a car that will appeal to future car buyers rather than current ones. 2020 is about 5.5 years down the road, after all.

1- will this contest actually lead to increase in sales??
2- wont it alienate existing car designers employed with P1? ( indirectly saying, we tink u not gud)
3- will P1 own the copyright design of the winner, and will the winner gain any benefit if his her design used in future production??

What’s the point of having nice prototype design displaying at exhibitions when the cars that Proton is selling are no where near resembling those models…the latest global small car that will be launched soon is a good example. During past exhibitions, Proton said they will be focusing on developing GSC car based on Proton Emas. However from spyshots of the car, its no where near the Emas design & more towards a Honda Brio! Had Proton produced cars that looked like the models including the SUV which was displayed sometime ago, their sales won’t be suffering like now.

Aiyaa people..if you understand the meaning of concept car then u would not complaining about it. For now, I agree with KZM. Concept car is only for show car. It is made for showcase for the new styling & new technology. It may and may not go for mass production. Reasons? changes made to suit with current situation, safety and compliance lor..

I also like their concept car of ‘Proton Pahlawan’during KLIMs 2010. especially the SUV (which pahlawan? i don’t know?). Really hope one day, PROTON will come out with their own SUV. I still believe PROTON will consider everything in their car (reliable engine, safety, quality).

Proton Emas and new GCS (based on spyshot)..i’ll vote the new one. Maybe i’ll buy for my son. hopefully the price is really worth it for the car.

Price cuts and competitions are not the answer to garner sales.
You need a complete overhaul of your set up and ability to provide timely launch of new fuel efficient models,Protong. If not,you are just sliding into panic, adhoc management doing damage control most of the time.

Toyota will be selling cars running on hydrogen very soon, next year. This is due to their continuous R n D,good work ethics and aggressiveness.
Protong has been using billions of Ringgit of R n D of taxpayers funded grants and still shamefully churning out ancient”Age of Extinction” Campro engines.
Now bereft of ideas, they are organising design competitions to buy time, like a cancer stricken patient.
By the time the winner is announced, its sales would have dropped to below 100k units annually.
Might as well bungkus, close shop and be a AP King bringing in parallel imports.Dont waste time, anymore.Time for protong has a limited span and is bleeding DRB Rm 500 juta a year with parasitic Lotus.

Albert Lee what car r u using? Do you know that most of Toyota nowadays in Msia using 1NZFE VVT-i engine which is old developed before 2002. This engine was underpower especially for new Vios 2013. The power is not there when desired. Meanwhile PROTON is now developing new engine and proven fuel efficient like what Preve and Suprima hav today. I also heard that for new GSC there will more improvement in terms of engine, NCAP and R&H.

This contest comes too late in my opinion. Proton have still not nailed down their design language/ identity for their models…

Opening Proton’s model line-up history book, it’s not surprising why they can’t compete with the big boys. Reason? They have failed to address the most fundamental/basic aspect of any established carmaker: planning & streamlining your product line-up.

This is not rocket science…there was just no proper follow through in their product planning dept – have a look at the list of discontinued models:
Proton Tiara (Citroen AX…!), Proton Juara (what were they thinking…), Proton Putra (You wanted coupes…right?)Proton Waja (Where’s the new Waja…?) Proton Savvy (why stop…cannot compete with Kenari ke…?), Proton Arena(remember this short-lived pick-up…?)

For a relatively small carmaker, Proton have certainly rolled out a number of dud models over the years. All have been doomed to the scrap heap after a brief life span & I imagine billions of hard-earned taxpayers money was used to produce these four-wheeled white elephants…!

And…there is the issue of model lineage (imagine what an overseas car buyer would ask…just basic questions that any Proton salesman should be able to answer with a straight face):
    1) What happened to the Persona (Proton Wira in the UK during the 90s)…? So is the current Persona the replacement Wira? Why not just continue with the Wira badge…? But shouldn’t Gen.2 be the replacement Wira since it came out first…? But why not just badge the Persona the Gen.2 sedan, it’s a similar model!? Wait…why is the Gen.2 discontinued…?

I can truly understand their confusion, even most locals will geleng kepala with Proton’s obvious affinity for name-dispensing…So where is Proton’s bread-and-butter model like your everyday Civics, Corollas, 3-series…? These are already in their 8th, 9th or 10th gen…Proton only have the Satria…sorry – the Neo…going into the 2nd generation…

Well, if there’s any hope of salvaging their rojak buah line-up & the mess they find themselves in right now…my advice is to start fresh from the Preve…establish your visual identity or lineage from there (like Kia’s tiger grill ‘face’)…& please no more naming spree nonsense for a similar model in future. And DRB would be well advised to look into this small matter…which could possibly kick-start Proton’s future…

But knowing Proton, I would probably be repeating the above rant in the very near future…and by then it could all be too late…and not even a car design contest can save a sinking ship anymore…
