2016 Mazda MX-5 teased ahead of September debut

To hype up the launch of the 2016 Mazda MX-5, which will occur on September 3 in the US (September 4 in Japan), Mazda USA has teased the next-generation roadster on its Facebook event invite, showing it under the covers.

From the looks of the image, the car looks to be very similar to the outgoing model, with prominent wheel arches and an undercut in the lower door area. This differs from recent reports that claimed that the new car will look very different from the current MX-5, utilising an evolved version of the “Kodo” design language. Then again, this could just be another case of bait-and-switch.

Mazda has revealed that the new MX-5 was designed using its SkyActiv principles of low weight, high engine output and low fuel consumption. This will include the use of the company’s high-compression, direct-injected SkyActiv engines, as well as “the most compact configuration yet” with a more centrally-positioned engine and a centre of gravity lower than ever before.

The company is aiming to shave more than 100 kg off the current model, despite endowing the body of the new model with “outstanding rigidity and crashworthiness.” The backbone chassis, including the engine, drivetrain and suspension components, was shown at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) earlier this year.

As of May 31, Mazda has sold nearly 945,000 MX5s since 1989, clinching the Guinness World Record for the bestselling two-seater sports car of all time in the process.

Mazda MX-5, revealed to be a blue cloth

OK, lame jokes aside, Just by looking at the initial proportion of the car, I’d can already say we will have a beauty coming from Hiroshima soon.

Some one will come and say GSC can easily smoke the mazda.

I guess he is talking about the car’s ability to smoke salmon, or chicken wings.

We probably not see it here but I’m betting the Alfa Romeo sister will be the better looking of the pair.

Alfa really needs to reconfigure and plonk in their new 1.7 Turbo from the 4C into the new spider.

The Mazda MX5’s classic overall body lines won’t be altered too much, but expect a totally revamped front-end and rear-end face that follow their Kodo design language..

I guess you can consider the Kodo-style grille to be a rather big smile but the face won’t be as friendly as before if it is Kodo’d.
