2015 Ford Mustang – RHD version begins testing

ford-mustang-2015-right-hand-drive-prototype

And there you have it – a brand-new Mustang with the steering wheel on the right. Ford has finished construction of the very first right-hand drive 2015 Mustang, and the prototype will undergo testing to prepare the pony for its leap into over 25 RHD markets around the world.

When global production begins, it’ll be the first time an RHD Mustang rolls off a Ford assembly line. While the US is naturally the car’s biggest market, more than 161,000 units have been sold elsewhere from its birth in 1964 to date; in 2012 alone, more than 4,000.

Now that the Mustang has finally got it ‘right’, its introduction in Malaysia is, at long last, not improbable. The icing on the cake is of course the road tax-friendly 2.3 litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with 310 hp and 433 Nm of torque (so why would you want the 300 hp/379 Nm 3.7 litre V6?), although we’re sure some would plump for nothing less than the 435 hp/541 Nm 5.0 litre V8.

We were in Sydney last year covering the official unveiling of the sixth-gen Ford Mustang – see full details, a mega gallery, finalised power figures, videos explaining the car and a video of the event itself.

Sadly no, the idea of a Mustang or a Camaro was to get alot of power for little cash compare to its european rivals, but once it reaches our shores, its gonna be priced 300-400k….n we starting cursing heaven and earth!

I don’t think that it will reach up to RM 300K when considering that even with 130% excise & duty (based on the rates I got from the MAA website: 30% import duty for CBU, 90% excise & 10 % sales tax) the total would amount to RM 202,092.95 (based on the Ecoboost 6-spd Auto base price of USD $27,775 = RM 87,866.49). If the car is launched next year & the sales tax is replaced with GST, the total price would amount to RM 198,578.25 (less around RM 3400). Of course manufacturers may be able to get lower excise rates from MITI and thus it may be cheaper if they look the other way in terms of getting fat profit margins, of course.

And don’t quote the stock price – it may look cheap (from $ 23,600 onwards), but if you buy it that way you won’t get much, not even a SPARE TYRE WHICH IS OPTIONAL ($195 to buy) on all Mustangs. The base price I quoted included things you’d expect on Malaysian cars such as floor mats, reverse sensors & spare tyres but nothing else.

But then again, the Mustang is not a bread & butter car for Ford in Malaysia so the pricing may be set to befit its status as the halo car for the brand, tax calculation be damned.

But as shown, the base price is already high so don’t expect it to be so cheap (and no, I don’t consider RM 80K to be cheap) even if the tax structure is changed.

This car could eat Porsche 911 Carrera S/Cayman S or BMW M4 for breakfast. On the other hand, maybe Chevrolet & Dodge(Chrysler) should consider making RHD Camaro and RHD Challenger respectively..

Sweet. I really hope this iconic car along with the rest like the camaro and corvette will make it here. 2.3 powerboost with 310hp got me drooling.

Ford, you got it right. Low capacity, efficient and powerful engine.

      • Do your homework, its a high compression 2.3 mazda engine, same one used in the 3 mps but with a bigger turbo. the regular mps’s here in malaysia are tuned to up to 330-370hp easily, thats why turbocharged engines are so popular.

Not if Sime Darby Auto Connexion have anything to do with it, being the official Ford distributor in Malaysia.

It’s a non luxury sports car. With our humid and hot weather, and ‘non-precision American engineering’ I’m really not sure about this. And how would you price the 2.3 litre version? Like Toyota 86?

Considering that the bone spec 2.3 EcoBoost Mustang costs around minus RM80k in America, I hope the import, RHD manufacturing & local tax costs won’t bring up the price too high. If Ford Malaysia prices this around 200-230k, I would take this over the A-class, Golf GTi, GT86/BRZ or BMW 125i any day. I should start saving now.. .. ..
