A traffic accident happened this morning at about 11am involving a 51 ton lorry carrying concrete tunnel lining segments for the MRT Project. The lorry had to apply its emergency brakes as traffic ahead of it had suddenly stopped.

It swerved a little but could not avoid hitting the vehicle in front. Because of the accident, 12 pieces of the 16 pieces of concrete tunnel lining segments that the lorry was carrying fell onto the road.

The 12 pieces of segments were moved to the side of the road and a crane was then mobilised to lift the segments into a back-up lorry. The lanes leading to the Taman Billion roundabout were reopened to all traffic at 1.30pm once operations to clean up the road completed.

MRT Corp said in a statement that the fallen material did not cause any injury to any person or car. Of course, this does not include the car was that was damaged at the rear by the lorry when it had to brake suddenly. The lorry belongs to a transportation contractor for the MRT Project Underground Works Package Contractor MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd and was transporting tunnel lining segments to the Pudu Launch Shaft.

MRT Corp is investigating the incident and says action will be taken against parties found responsible for the accident. Initial investigations reveal that the driver, who has 23 years of lorry driving experience, had the appropriate driver’s license. He had also gone through the induction course for transporting segments which was carried out by MMC Gamuda for all lorry drivers.

Rumours that the driver fled the scene are untrue, according to the statement – the driver stayed with the site supervisor throughout the operation to remove the fallen segments.

The location later experienced flash flooding due to extremely heavy rain which began at about 3pm. A number of the New Jersey Barriers (NJB) used to line the worksite were swept onto the middle of the road. Several vehicles were stalled in the floodwaters.

The Emergency Respond Team from IJM Construction Sdn Bhd, the Work Package Contractor for this section of works, were immediately mobilised to remove the floating NJBs and rescue the drivers from their stalled vehicles.

Water receded when the rain stopped at 4.45pm. Work to clean the site of mud is currently on-going.

Were those segments fastened properly? With 4 layers high? I doubt so.

In my opinion, this incident happened due to three possibilities: (1)tailgating (2)speeding (3)improper loading. Heavy transports are not designed for excited maneuvers. They are supposed to be driven slowly with steady stops. If there were vehicles alongside it, this would’ve easily become a full tragedy. Shameful incident, if you ask me.

All 3 factors happen daily along most toll expressways, sometimes you can see that the lorry is tilted towards 1 side with heavy load, all motorists who drives daily to work will witnessed many times this kind of accidents, nothing surprised here.

Easy to blame the lorry driver but traffic in Cheras is terrible to begin with. Sudden stops are nothing new

Traffic congestion is one thing, loads falling out from lorries that brake suddenly is totally different issue. The second issue is a matter of negligence of the lorry driver and lorry company.

Don’t you need an escort vehicle at the front for a trailer this big, in the middle of town?

That’s why we shouldn’t built a MRT at first place, it’s better just spend the RM20billion to fund for other project that can be pride of Malaysia.

Looking at the place of accident, I won’t blame the trailer driver at all…

if you’ve used that stretch of road you would know that many “expert” drivers (let’s call them that rather than some other words) would actually cut the queue heading to the roundabout just before the bridge causing massive traffic jam, as only the right most lane can access the bridge, or even near miss accidents…

these “expert” drivers would normally drive as fast as possible on the right most lane then just before the bridge change to the left to cut the queue and most of the time would end up stopping on the left lane causing other drivers heading up to the bridge to either stop and wait for them to cut the queue or avoid them..

You just say the word in my mind.
This location is famous “short cut” for the “expert drivers”( sudden break and cut to left )

REALLY HOPE the traffic JPJ please do something on this case and location.

Fix the expert drivers’ excellent mentality first before asking heavy transports to drive at night. Malaysia oh malaysia…

Why don’t just research magnetic laylines around the Earth which intersect having vortex involved? Is it possible under the ocean contain a well hidden base.

actually securing load by gravity with minimal strapping is a technique they use to haul such heavy loads…

imagine if all the concrete blocks are firmly fastened/secured on the flatbed of the trailer and suddenly the trailer had to do a sudden stop or sudden swerve, the momentum would cause the whole trailer to tilt over or worse…

having the loads on the trailer by gravity would cause only the concrete blocks to move without taking the whole trailer with it…

In Malaysia they always overload their trailer who knows. Worry when it become inertia involve when sudden stop or swerve.
