2015 Ford S-MAX unveiled ahead of Paris debut

The covers have been pulled off the new 2015 Ford S-MAX ahead of its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show next month. The second generation of Ford’s low-slung seven-seater MPV was previewed by a concept at Frankfurt last year.

An evolution of the outgoing model’s design, the styling of the new car has stayed relatively faithful to the earlier concept, with Ford’s now familiar Aston Martin-esque grille, swept-back headlights, small fender vents aft of the front wheels, teardrop-shaped side window profile and wide tail lights.

The only major changes are the addition of door handles, more production-friendly side mirrors, smaller wheels and more conventional front and rear fascias that replace the concept’s chrome-heavy units.

Inside, the more fantastical features such as the Citroën-like tall windscreen and the gear selector that appears to be nicked from a Jaguar have been dispensed with. It’s still very familiar, however, with a sporty-looking three-spoke steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster and a tall centre console with a large central screen flanked by slim air vents.

New features include adaptive steering, power-folding second- and third-row seats, a hands-free tailgate activated by waving a foot under the rear bumper (as seen on the Kuga), an electrically-adjustable steering column and even heated and ventilated massage seats.

Safety-wise, the S-MAX now comes with second-row side airbags, perpendicular automated parking, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot monitoring and automated braking.

Engine options have not been finalised, but they are expected to be a 2.0 litre TDCi diesel with 118 hp, 148 hp and 177 hp outputs, as well as Ford’s new 1.5 litre EcoBoost petrol four with 158 hp and a range-topping 2.0 litre EcoBoost petrol with 237 hp. A six-speed manual and PowerShift dual clutch transmissions will be offered, as well as four-wheel drive for the first time.

Quite a good looking MPV…actually looks quite sporty.

Some of that safety-kit sounds like they’re Volvo tech, especially the rear cross-traffic warning.

good, cheaper, safer, nicer alternative for Estima. Toyota is overpriced and unsafe car manufacturer. Not the top line (Camry and Alphard) but lower; e.g. Vios vs City, Previa (Estima) vs Ford S-max. Which one have traction control ?????? Which one cheaper ???? Which one has more airbags ?????

I test drove the previous generation model, and the handling was sublime. Quiet cabin, smooth transmission, willing engine, etc…… until it broke down on the fast lane of a speedy road. SA said it was out of gas. My motorhead told me it was something else. Deal was off after that.

I beg to differ…This S-MAX looks sleeker compared to the B-class. Not sure about the interior space differences, though. If status quo remains, the Ford will be smaller inside while being a better drive.

I’m just curious to know; How do you estimate a car’s level of comfort? When I look at the picture, the seat looks plush and comfy but something tells me the car doesn’t have enough weight to ‘iron out’ the bumpy roads of KL.

Been researching…My Criteria for buying an MPV:
a). Safety is the most important! Its a people mover, most likely kids as well. The S Max ticks off with the VSC, Traction etc….most important. 6 newly designed airbags that helps with side impact….

b). It is loaded with a bunch of features….esp the automatic seat configurator (u tube it)

c). It actually looks pretty good and sporty for an MPV. Did you say it seats 7?

d). Should drive pretty well esp with the 2 lit ecoboost engine….200 horses?

e). Now the downside….Ford service levels in Malaysia. Heard som horror stories esp on spareparts for CBU models…

I believe if they bring it in to MY, I would give it a serious look…big departure from the usual Serenas, Estimas, Mazda Briante (?) etc.
