Now that the Perodua Axia has been revealed in full, ASEAN NCAP has finally released a crash test video of Malaysia’s most affordable car. The organisation released videos of the three other cars tested at the time last month, but did not provide one of the Axia as it was still under wraps.
The car tested was the base Standard E model, which features dual airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors on the rear seats but no ABS. It scored a four-star rating (12.91 out of 16 points) for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP) and a four-star rating (71% compliance) in Child Occupant Protection (COP).
The Axia is the first car to make its market introduction complete with ASEAN NCAP results, and according to the agency it is also the most affordable car with a four-star rating for both AOP and COP.

Axia might be cheap due to its EEV status and getting tax rebate for that. Otherwise, it would be hard for Perodua to sell this car cheaper than Viva while it is better than Viva in almost every aspects. In terms of value and safety, this is better than Kancil or Viva and perhaps even Myvi.
This car should set the minimum safety level for all new cars in Malaysia after this. Concern parents should buy a car with isofix. Axia offer greater child protection than Vios due to this. And please make ESP/VSC as standard, Malaysia has lots of rainfall and a light vehicle like this might lost control if driver do a sudden maneuver in the rain.

Axia get EEV status because it have a very small engine with very little horsepower. in fact, Axia only BARELY pass the minimum FC set for EEV;
EEV car weight 801-1000kg = 5L/100km
Axia auto is 4.975L/100km
Myvi wouldn’t get EEV because of its engine.
small engine is not suitable for Proton as Proton has big and heavy cars/MPV. So, they’re going for Electic / Hybrid way. However, the cost is still very high so they need to optimize the tech and reduce the price. Malaysia is very price-sensitive market. And you said Proton has no capabilities? Their Exora RE-EV won Royal Automobile Club (RAC) Future Car Challenge in England. Iriz has been designed to support electric and hybrid so they would probably have EV Iriz and Saga in few more years.

My family have been Proton users for the last 28 years, beginning with the Saga, then the Wira, to the Gen-2, the Savvy & then the new Saga, so safe to say I’ve gone through most of it all. Not much problems faced, like the infamous power windows and the like.
I also have owned a Honda City during that same period too. Why? Because my family was your typical Malaysian family that thinks: you start off with a Proton, then you upgrade to another brand once you have made it. So we did. And in the end I regret it – that Honda was so troublesome it’s certainly not worth it to buy! Let me list it out for you:
1) Electrics – the left hand side mirror doesn’t work so I can’t adjust it electronically
2) Central locking – after 2 years, the left rear lock motor failed & I had to replace it. Once replaced, it only took another 2 years before I had to replace it again.
3) Wheel bearings – 5 wheel bearings had to be replaced throughout my 7 year ownership at RM 250 a set.
4) Engine mounts – 4 times I had to replace the engine mounts, and by the time I sold the car, it’s still is broken!
5) And the kicker – the gearbox. The first and hopefully only car my family have ever owned which required a gearbox change. Not repairable. So no choice but to get a recond for RM 5,000. And here’s the kicker, by the time I sold the car about a year after that, even the replacement gearbox is having problems!
I don’t feel cheated by Proton. But I do felt cheated by Honda looking back over my experience.

In around your time.. I did some research on Honda & vios.. so in 2006 I decided to buy Vios.. because I know.. that time city’s gear can cost you a limb.. new tech come with some cost.. now city back to conventional auto 5 speed.
If you read carefully. . When bash plotong. . I never include Wira.. because Wira was worth buying. . It’s Mitsubishi platform.. & all Mitsu parts can go in.. repair is a bliss… & during that time plotong did lots of profit.. same with Neo.. it was from Mitsu Mirage. . But now with campros.

The ABS is optional in Axia, the Axia SE and Advance variance have ABS in it. With just 25k for Axia E, people really cannot ask too much from it..

In fact, all other NCAP is rubbish, cause cannot compare to real life. But why NCAP is still there? It because NCAP is setting a guide line for car manufacturer to produce a safer car, so passenger with higher NCAP star rating car have lower death percentage.
From the way the Malaysians drive their cars, I do agree that All NCAPs are rubbish in Malaysia.
The drivers that perished are not drivers from P2 only but across all manufacturers.

I just sat in a Axia SE just now, overall the built quality seems to have improve not only from the Viva, but also my family 2008 Alza as well. The plastic thou hard dosen’t feel flimsy and the center console is surrounded with suprisingly goood quality.
Of course, safety isn’t one of the Axia’s strong point…. along with performance, design, desirability and personality. Basically, its just a car, at RM33k, competing in a market where buyers do not have the luxuury to fork ‘only’ RM8k more of a Proton PCC(yes, suprise, there are people that poor). It’s a huge improvement over the Viva.
Of course, I would say ABS as standard followed by ESC on the top range must be implemented in the next facelift.
I too hope P2 will include ABS as standard in the next AXIA facelift . It is a good car for it’s price and i wont be expecting high end safety features for a car this price but ABS is so mainstream even some bikes have it . There is absolutely no reason for P2 to exclude ABS just to cut cost . I rather they exclude the radio and speakers for the G variant and replace it with ABS . radio system and speakers can be installed aftermarket . Safety features unfortunately is not that simple .
Hey, this can be a good cheeky point for PCC to play with. During Axia launch, P2 prominently strike on PCC with its 18km/l vs Axia’s 21km/l FC. :-) Tomorrow, should they choose to, strike back with the 5 vs 4 star NCAP lah pulak…alahai, just for fun lah kan.
