The new Honda Civic Type R is coming, featuring a turbocharged engine for the first time. In case we’ve forgotten about it, Honda has decided to put an updated version of the Civic Type R Concept on its Paris Motor Show stand this year, finished in a luminous blue paint.
Honda’s claims for the new Type R are bold – it says the new car offers “unmatched” performance compared to all previous Type R cars – this includes Type R versions of the Civic, Integra, Accord and even the NSX.
Under the hood is a new turbocharged 2.0 litre i-VTEC engine producing over 280 PS with a 7,000 rpm rev limit. It’s not quite what the last engine could do in terms of sheer revs, but the turbo makes up for it in terms of torque. It’s mated to a six-speed manual.
The new Type R will ride on a new four-point adaptive damper system. There will also be a “+R” mode selectable for track driving, which adjusts the engine mapping, steering, and damper system.
Honda intends for the new Type R to break the current record for the fastest front wheel drive lap time at the Nurburgring, currently held by the Renault Megane RS 275 Trophy-R with a 7:54.36 lap time.
The Honda Civic hatch (and its Tourer estate sibling) was recently facelifted for Europe, with a new Sport variant serving to bridge the aesthetic gap between the regular car and the upcoming Type R.

wow .. looks way better than any of its competitor .. stunning looks with very aggressive bodykit .. thats what we want . thank you Honda for making such a wonderful machine.
I hope it’s no longer on Torsion Beam for the rears.
Looks Beng, but a Type R still stirs a bit of this uncle’s heart here.
It will likely come with a Torsion Beam rear end, given that its sharing the same platform that underpins the Jazz and the City. While its less than perfect, it is probably less an issue with handling than with ride comfort (most of these hot hatches go into tripod mode in hard cornering irregardless of that rear suspension it has – even my jello-chassis Satria corners with one rear wheel on the ground, despite being “independent”). The Megane does pretty decent without independent rears.
Now that said, hey Honda, enough with the teasers already. ’bout time you released it.
The loath for torsion beam is understandable, moreover coming from a satria owner.. the belief is probably inflicted by Jeremy Clarkson and spew others in Lowyat forums.
Although it comes with a rear torsion beam, the civic hatch was never based on a fit/city platform. The civic hatch was axed in Japan because the Fit dimension has grown and almost overlapping the shorter civic.
Yes, technically torsion beam is inferior but when Mugen developed the M200, the engineers commented the hatch base is more stable in term of handling.
Check out the tuned Spoon FN2. It is as fast as other tuned FD2R.
Fugly as hell
This will smoke the Golf R for sure.
It’s been Ah-Beng-ified too much, imo.
just 7000rpm limit??? that’s not even a proper Type-R anymore!
tuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrbooooooooooooooo…
That changes things.
An updated version of a concept….
Hehehe..
Maybe the current concept still cant beat the Megane RS 275 around the ring?
