The second-generation Porsche Panamera is set to arrive in the near future with prototypes already making their way around, as seen in the various photos. The current Porsche Panamera, type 970, was first introduced to the world in 2009 to mixed reviews.
Nothing wrong with the way it drove, actually. In fact, the Panamera excelled in almost every objective category – competing against the Aston Martin Rapide and Maserati Quattroporte – but fell below expectations when it came to the subjective side of things.
A fair amount of criticism was lobbed at the Panamera’s styling with the majority of international publications agreeing that it could and should have been styled with more finesse. Well, it looks like Porsche has finally caved in and looks to be preparing a sleeker, refreshed Panamera.
The second-generation Porsche Panamera will have its underpinnings based on the new MSB platform, derived from the Volkswagen Group. Despite the heavy camouflage, one can see that the new car has a sleeker profile, allowing for a more coupe-like appearance.
In some of the photos, the first-generation Panamera – along with its facelifted variant – can be seen testing side by side with the new car. Look closely and you’ll be able to spot the inclusion of a sunroof this time round. Speaking of profiles, the window line appears to extend further into the C-pillar on the new car.
This should help to improve aesthetics as well as helping to make the interior a tad bit airier for passengers. In front, the upcoming model sports a redesigned headlight assembly and what looks like a slightly larger grille, giving it a more cohesive look.
Further changes at the side, include a more defined belt line that runs through almost the entirely length of the car, smoothening out just before the rear door handles. On the current Panamera, said design cue stops short of the front door handles instead.
The rear will most likely feature new rear lamp designs which – from the spyshots, at least – give off the impression of a slightly larger 981-generation Cayman rear end. Also different this time round is a more dynamic-looking, defined rear diffuser as opposed to the current car’s less dramatic one.
Future engine options should include an all-new range of V6 and V8 options with rear-wheel drive as well as the option of all-wheel drive being featured. Apart from the usual range, expect a shooting brake variant to become a reality, previewed earlier on by the Sport Turismo concept.

I found the Panamera, when it was first launched, to be very ugly. But after a few years, I can accept the design already. And its actually quite good looking, and as imposing as ever. But that weird design does pay dividends inside. There’s so much space in the front & rear seats (too bad it can only take 2 in the back – cos this would’ve made a great & fast family hauler). Its got way more legroom inside than a 5 Series, probably as good as a 7 series.
It completes the ‘beached whale’ look.
