Honda Integra successor hinted, 2017 debut possible

According to Car and Driver, we could be looking at a successor to the Honda Integra in the coming years. Speaking at the 2014 SEMA show, Acura chief designer, Dave Marek, has stated that the company is looking to introduce a new Honda Integra/Acura RSX to relive the company’s glory days back in the 1990s.

The last Honda Integra, the DC5, was pulled out of production in the mid-2000s with Honda announcing no immediate replacement. Things could be set to turn around as Acura gears up for the launch of the new NSX which is set to debut soon, leading many to believe that Honda could be rediscovering its sporting mojo.

In its most powerful variant, the Honda Integra Type-R DC5 – the Japan-only version – was powered by a K20A 2.0 litre, naturally aspirated engine with 217 hp. It came with the addition of a limited slip differential (LSD), Brembo brakes and a host of weight-saving measures.

Honda-Integra-Type-R

Perhaps the biggest hint was dropped by Marek himself when he said that “a performance brand needs a flagship and it needs an accessible sport car. Not a sports car, but a sport car.” With the a halo model already confirmed, fans of an entry-level performance-oriented Honda can start saving.

Marek has also claimed that Honda/Acura openly acknowledged it made a mistake in trying to position themselves upmarket, leaving behind their dedicated fan base. Should the new Integra become a reality, expect the Type-R version to share its best bits from the upcoming Honda Civic Type R concept.

Hm, sounds good, however our 86 is better, especially on handling.

    • Its not S2K(S2000) to have rear wheel drive option, they should keep it FWD(Front Wheel Drive) for Integra next generation for sake of its history.

Doesn’t make sense. An Integra should be: –

      1. FWD
      2. 6-speed Manual
      3. NA
      4. Cheap

      My wishlist:-

      1. Bring it to Malaysia.
      2. Price it cheap. (ish)
      3. Sell like hot cakes.

Honda can keep the nameplate but time moves on bro, expect a turbo (but still high revving) engine for the new Integra..

      Rear Drive? Twin-clutch Tranny?

You will be just forcing Honda to become BMW, playing a game that it will definitely loose. Honda has never made RWD apart from the S2k and NSX mind you, their strength and trademark has always been their FWD mated to a responsive drivetrain. Type-Rs on the other hand are much more hardcore than BMW’s M, they are akin to the M3 CSL or GTS of the E46 and E92 series, strip out ,hunkered down road racer.

Honda can always learn :)..Perhaps Honda can a learn a thing or two from their Honda HSV-10 , Front-engined & RWD racecar to challenge BMW..

Honda need to produce the successor of Integra Type R, S2000, Prelude Type R and the pocket-rocket Honda Beat (as hinted in the S660 concept). All these models, should be a perfect addition to the new NSX & Civic Type R. Japan is seriously lacking in high performance models compared to the ze Germans..

You didn’t read the article? High performance cars won’t come from Japan:

…and for heaven sake, keep it affordable. U make it like the Skyline pricetag, then the mass won’t get to enjoy this piece of legend (re-incarnated).

The DC2 was my all time favorite, with a lil’ oversteer dialed in at the limit.

Lovely banshe-screaming DOHC VTEC, probably the best along with the unit in the S2000.

Oh how we missed Jap sports and super cars. So we’ve witnessed the rebirth of the 86, upcoming Supra (FT1), NSX, rumored Silvia and now this. Lovely.

This is a uniquely Japanese problem.

Unlike say, BMW, which basically makes the same cars available in all its markets, the Japanese tend to have very market segmentized models. Without the necessary volumes, the survival of individual niche models would be questionable at best.

They tried to sell the Acura RSX-Type S in North America, but if you tag on the optional FP performance pack, the price would crest USD30K, which is a tall order and something nipping on the price range of an E46 328 Coupe.

At that time, I remembered you could get a lot of cars with a lot more sporting pretentions, namely the Miata, and the Rx8 for that sort of money, and those arn’t exactly wet noodles when you throw some curves at them.

Build it well, price it right and sell enough of them and Honda may have a new legend in the making.

Question is, will it utilise the NSX’s AWD hybrid chassis (rears powered by petrol engine, fronts by batteries with negative torque through corners)? It would be a waste to develop one new plank for the NSX, and not to reuse it elsewhere. Should be very interesting.

i thought CRZ is already the successor of Integra in the modern-petrol savvy way

    • CRZ is successor of Honda CR-X. Google and Wikipedia may help you :)

The CRZ was a limp fisted attempt to answer a question no one was asking.

If Honda actually made the CRZ with a 1.5 or 1.8L NA engine and made it handle, it would have been the spiritual sucessor to the CRX. Small, lightweight, good handling and economical sporty hatchback. I know many Honda fans were really dissapointed when the CRZ turned out to be a hybrid.

What honda needs to do is to make the Euro Civic Type R available in North America… then work on a compact rear drive platform that will underpin a new roadster and a new compact Rear drive Coupe (maybe call that Integra). They can use this back peddler to take the fight to the new Miata (and the Alfa sibling – which is also going to hit US market) and as an alternative to the Scion/Toyota FT86/BRZ.

If Hyundai off all people can make a rear drive coupe back in 2010 and replaced the Tiburon, don’t tell me Honda didn’t see the writing on the wall.

  • Awesome Honda to get their glory back at 1990!!! Other car manufacturer have their own move to get their glory back at 80’s and 90’s like Toyota have GT86,Subaru have Impreza WRX STi,Nissan have GT-R,and Mazda has MX-5.But Mitsubishi went a dick move to just make puny SUV and EV cars.

The Honda Integra never really caught on in my heart as my favorite of the Hot-Hondas, I never really get the point between it and the ‘normal’ EK Civic Type-R. But 108hp/l NA engine, not as good as the JDM-AP1 S2k 124hp/l, but when you consider the Lamborghini Aventador does 107hp/l from its NA engine, you kinda get why everybody sorts of dore this car. Its NA engine was high strung and having heard one lashing everything it got before, its the closest thing I can get to a Banshee Shriek of the Lexus LFA.

Of course, the hallmark of the old Integra(nice name thou)Type-Rs, its wonderful N/A engine, won’t see revival in this new one if it ever comes. The new Type-R will debut a Turbo engine and so far, I haven’t read enough review of it that proves it lives up to the B-engine legend. Personally, I think it would be best to just rebadge and modify the next-gen Civic Coupe and call it an Integra, like how BMW did it with the 3 and 4 series, the 4series has a wider and lower stance than a 3er. A lowered widened Civic Coupe with more agressive detailing would make a fine Integra IMO.

GT86 is just not enough for Toyota, they need to produce the successor to the Supra, Celica GT4 & MR2!
