New JDM Honda Legend revealed – possibility of flagship sedan coming to Malaysia being studied

am_lg1411041H

Honda has revealed the new Honda Legend for the Japanese domestic market. The flagship sedan will go on sale in the Land of the Rising Sun on January 22, 2015.

The fifth-generation Legend, a Honda-badged Acura RLX, features Honda’s Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel Drive) system, which combines three electric motors (one front, two rear) with a 3.5 litre V6 engine equipped with Variable Cylinder Management. Max output is 382 PS and Honda says that acceleration is superior to that of a V8 engine. A seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox does transmission duties.

The Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system automatically combines FWD, RWD or AWD with EV Drive, Hybrid Drive or Engine Drive for optimum performance and efficiency. The two rear motors, with 36 hp each, provide torque vectoring drive and deceleration power to the rear wheels in any ratio.

All three motors capture kinetic energy during vehicle deceleration and braking, converting it to electricity to supply a 72-cell, 1.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack located behind the rear seatback. Fuel consumption is rated at 16.8 km/l in the Japanese JC08 mode

Honda is also proud of the Legend’s new Honda Sensing system. The suite of active safety systems, which first appeared on the US-market 2015 Honda CR-V facelift, has been updated with a world-first feature called Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering (PCMS).

Honda Sensing also includes Collision Mitigation Braking (braking only), Road Departure Mitigation (steering wheel vibrations if stray, corrective input, braking), Lane Keeping Assist (steering assist, vibrations if stray, >65 km/h), Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow (can come to a full stop and start off again) and Traffic Sign Recognition, among other things.

The big sedan features new lower double-joint double wishbone front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, with amplitude-sensitive dampers. Thanks to Honda’s proprietary technology for connecting steel and aluminum, all of the door skins are made of lightweight aluminum.

NVH-combating measures include an active control engine mount and tyres with in-built aluminum foil. US-based Krell Industries is the audio supplier for the new Legend, which comes with 14 speakers.

Now here’s the interesting part. Sources within Honda Malaysia have said that the company is studying the feasibility of bringing in the Legend, and that the flagship could either wear Acura or Honda badges. Should that come true, the Legend will join the soon-to-be-launched Hyundai Genesis, another big Asian sedan packed with tech and kit. Perhaps a few units of the Legend might trickle in via grey importers, too.

  • Could be good when this car available at here but please remove the Lane Keeping Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition because we have terrible road and non used road sign also we want Acura badge for Malaysian market because its rare to see one in Malaysia(except normal Honda owner use Acura badge).By the way this thing produce a big amount of power which is lovely! But don’t too hyped for this car because Honda Malaysia will strip every feature for money and low cost….more better if they make entry line for this model…..

Bring this in Malaysia then we’ll have a new D-Segment Winner! Honda City: King of B-Segment. Honda Legend: King of D-Segment. Hopefully Civic’s facelift will come sooner to reign as King of C-Segment

I do hope they bring it here, memories of my old ’93 legend with its smooth C32A 3.2 V6 engine still brings a smile to my face. Road tax was a killer though.

I remember that car. What a sight it was. Even when I see the odd one on the road now (20 years after I first saw it) I still get goosebumps. Then, I saw the coupe version, just once. That was even more amazing. The 90s were really high times for Honda.

Thanks to Proton and its brilliant concept: IF PROTON CAN’T MAKE GOOD CAR, THEY WILL ENSURE LEAST MALAYSIAN CAN OWN ONE AS WELL.

Honda should consider to bring in the entry level engines first (e.g V6 3.5L). The styling is a bit lacking in wow factor.

Cool…this will be how Honda shows up its tech – in a giant sedan that will surely make its presence felt on the road.

I have slight doubts on this, unless priced very lucratively, anywhere below RM400k , below the E250 and 528i prices, and it might have a chance but I honestly don’t expect it to move out of the showroom fast. The problem lies in the badge. There is in no way the upright-H can compete with the likes of icons like the propeller, three-pointed star and four rings. Design alone is lagging behind all of its peers including the rather handsome Lexus, I maybe a Honda guy at heart, by this truth be told, looks like a bloated Accord.

However, if specs were to mirror that of the JDM or USDM RLX, there is one area it has all the competition beaten….tech. The amount of passive and active collision warning is stunning, nothing short of a Volvo or a top-tier Euro-spec Mercedes. The SH-AWD system also shares with the upcoming NSX flagship, and here’s the thing, this does the 0-60 sprint in 5sec flat, thats faster than a RM600k 535i.

So yea, I have my doubts weather it sells. But if HM brings it here, and price it well. It still wont compete with Ze Germans for sales. But its a great alternative.

it’s a great image-building car for Honda Malaysia, and please no, don’t bring in with an Acura badge. don’t think that badge will do any favor for Honda, and frankly i think Honda badge will strangely not look out of place on this big saloon, maybe because Honda badge is upmarket enough, and Honda Legend is a more commanding name than some RLX or whatever name.

Agreed, Honda Legend name is the best option since the nameplate itself is more familiar with the regions outside the US. If only Honda could give it a more exciting exterior design and a more upmarket interior look..

Thanks. but i think the interior is upmarket enough, not the white one but the black and brown one. if it could be priced below 300k, it would be a rather attractive prospect. imagine this one against the ES. wow…..

I thought the white/biege coloured interior looks more appealing & luxurious than the grey/black colour? Although, the cleaning side could be one hell of a job.

  • I hope Honda will eventually bring this in to spice up the competition here. We really need more choices and varieties. I doubt it will be in Acura badge as that will mean a totally different, new concept, just like Lexus and Infinity but who knows? Maybe we will be getting Acura in Malaysia.

    I can’t wait.

The exterior styling is creditable. The road presence is strongly felt, but Honda needs to work harder on the interior. That interior doesn’t look or feel luxury; it’s nowhere near the Lexus GS or Infinity Q50, its arch rivals in the US, leave alone more established players like the 5series or E-Class.

Those who put price tag of < RM400K is just too optimistic and ambitious.
Even if it is RM250K, I think most of the potential buyers will go for Lexus ES (a lousy product, to me), if not a CX-9 at RM322K. A brand-new 520d can be yours for around RM320K if you know how to.

Honda probably will not let you choose the interior colour even if you have to fork out RM250K for this Legend.

Super high tech car. Sadly let down by the boring and safe exterior design. Interior is still alright in my opinion. Read rave reviews about its Krell premium sound system (for the higher specs model).

Design wise, I still prefer the 2nd generation Legend. That was one of the most beautiful Honda/Acura ever made. Even that Legend cost slightly over RM200k back in 1993/94, and only a few were ever sold. Wonder how much this new one will cost now. Surely, it will be in tough company. In my opinion, Honda Malaysia would be better off bringing in the Acura TLX, which is slightly smaller. That one looks sportier, and will be cheaper than the Legend.

if this car even being imported to malaysia, I am sure HONDA Malaysia will make the spec as kosong as they can……bare bone car…

Why? Becoz they know malaysian as still stupid enuf to pay a hefty sum for a below standard car.

  • At one cursory glance, this looks like a bigger Accord. It is definitely lacking the wow factor in the looks department compared to other premium cars e.g. Lexus GS. Meanwhile, what’s under the skin though is one word: ICHIBAN!

Not quite the same. Maybe its an upgrade of the Accord chasis? Based on Wikipedia, the RLX’s front subframe is aluminium (doubt the Accord has any aluminium there). The RLX also has double wishbone front suspension whereas Accord is Mac struts, though rears are the same multilinks.

The earlier version was a sales flop in the UK because it was outclassed in every way by the other marques, besides being priced too high. According to the reports, ‘soon to be a ‘legend'” and not in a kind way. Let that be a guide to Honda, Kia or Hyundai. Might be better to rename a luxury category like Lexus or Infiniti or Acura instead
