SPIED: Maruti Suzuki YRA new hatchback undisguised

Maruti Suzuki YRA Spyshots-01

Spyshots of a mystery Suzuki hatchback have been circulating online, showing undisguised units of a five-door hatch transiting at an airport with an Etihad Airways plane in the background.

Reports from India, where Maruti Suzuki is the market leader, are identifying the car as the “Maruti Suzuki YRA”, a bigger and more premium hatchback than the popular Swift. It will be Maruti’s rival to the new Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and Honda Jazz in the subcontinent.

The new hatch won’t be confused with a Swift, even if there are some borrowed cues like the blacked-out A pillars and long headlamps that eat into the front wing. Vertical daytime running lights (DRLs) are integrated into the lower air intakes.

The YRA’s grille is new for Suzuki and pretty unique generally; it reminds us of Nissan’s now signature V-Motion nose without the wings. The door panels are more sculptured and the car sports a strong pair of shoulders. Compared to the Swift, the YRA has a more sloped C-pillar, taller rump and smaller rear windscreen. The wheels seen here are similar in design to our Swift’s.
