New BMW X1 – F48’s front end spotted undisguised!

Chinese website Autohome has posted this solitary shot of the next-gen F48 BMW X1 – the SUV’s face seems to have been brought in line with its bigger X siblings, featuring new headlamps, a prominent kidney grille and xLine-specific bumper accents. And check out those snowflake alloys!

Based on the UKL platform used by the new MINI and 2 Series Active Tourer, the new X1 will be front-wheel drive and transverse-engined for the first time – so there should be more space inside than in the outgoing E84. We can also expect xDrive four-wheel drive versions in the near future – and maybe an X2 ‘coupe’? Then there’ll finally be X1-7, uninterrupted.

Engines and gearboxes available on the 2 Series Active Tourer should be offered here, including 1.5 litre B38 three-cylinder and 2.0 litre B48 four-cylinder petrol motors, diesel mills, a six-speed manual, a six-speed auto and an eight-speed auto. Expect a full reveal sometime next year.

Definitely will look better than the current X1 and IMHO front or rear driven doesn’t really matter on vehicles such as this especially when xDrive is included.

Not sure how the FWD based X-Drive will work, but on other similar architecture in Evoque, CRV, etc, the car is still an FWD car by default. Only when slip is detected that power/torque is pushed to the rear wheels. This is unlike the AWD systems in Subaru & Quattro (but only on the A4 upwards), which have all 4 wheels powering the car at all times – so the car has maximum grip at all times.

Anyways, I doubt ppl who buy this new X1 are going to take it to the track or for hooning. Its more of a family hauler type of vehicle. They won’t know or care whether its FWD, RWD, AWD, etc, as long as it has a BMW badge in front – which is pretty sad to be honest. Having said that, the current X1 is a good handling car, as its based on the E90.

While snowflake alloys are not new to BNM (I recall the 1st gen X5 had it), the one on the new X1 here does seem really thin, so it gives impression of a larger rim.
