We’ve been shown the McLaren P1 GTR in “design concept” guise at Pebble Beach last August; now it’s nearly time to welcome the production version, which will make its debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March ahead of the first cars rolling out of Woking later in the year.
The track-only F1 GTR-inspired speed demon will come in with an incredible power-to-weight ratio of more than 700 PS per tonne – over 10% higher than the road-going P1 – through significant weight saving measures and circuit-oriented optimisation of the hybrid powertrain.
While outputs from the 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8 engine and electric motor combo has yet to be disclosed, McLaren bandied a power figure of 1,000 PS for the concept, 84 PS more than the standard P1.
The GTR has completed thousands of kilometres of testing in several UK and European locations, as well as coping with the intense heat in Bahrain and Qatar, further improving on cooling and aerodynamics over the concept. In fact, the car will continue being put to its paces in the coming months across Europe and the Middle East to fine-tune the performance, aerodynamics, driving dynamics and handling balance.
Also to be unveiled is the McLaren P1 GTR Driver Programme, which in the coming weeks will see owners invited to the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking to kick off a driving experience on race circuits across the world. It’s certainly a big year for hypercar-based track monsters, with Ferrari also recently unveiling its new LaFerrari-derived FXX K that will hit circuits this year.
