France to offer diesel drivers up to 10k euro to go EV

renault zoe

Following an earlier report on France planning to gradually phase out the use of diesel for passenger cars and implement a pollution ranking system for cars, Bloomberg and Automotive News Europe have reported that from April, the French government will offer diesel drivers up to 10,000 euro (RM40,400) if they swap their cars for electric vehicles (EV).

“We have to eliminate old diesel cars that are more than 13 years old and have no filters,” energy minister Segolene Royal was quoted as saying, adding that 60% of the French population breathe unhealthy air. “(But) we have to be realistic because there are industries that make diesel cars, there are jobs involved,” she said.

Renault, of course, welcomed the incentives – a 10,000 euro rebate reduces the Zoe‘s effective price to 12,400 euro (RM50,100), while a Nissan Leaf would effectively cost 14,390 euro (RM58,100). The Zoe and Leaf are the best-selling passenger EVs in the country, with 5,970 Zoes and 1,604 Leafs finding owners last year, according to analysts Inovev.

Diesel is taxed less than petrol in France, contributing towards 80% of French motorists driving diesel cars. But according to the national carmakers association CCFA, 64% of new cars sold last year in the country were diesel, compared to a 73% high in 2012.

In December, the French government announced that the TICPE excise tax (domestic duty on consumption of energy products) on diesel is set to go up by two euro cents (nine sen) a litre, drawing 807 million euro (RM3.54 billion) into state coffers in 2015.

Malaysia should offer RM40k incentive to match with France for Malaysian to replace their old cars to new and efficient cars. At the same time, that incentive should be added with GST, import/excise duty etc same like how government imposed tax to car to be sold in Malaysia.
Thus net incentive that Malaysian should received is estimated RM100k as minimum. Nuff said.

  • Where is MAI? on Feb 11, 2015 at 10:27 am

Malaysia doing what? Most people as well as Car Manufacturers started moving towards EEV (not EV) in Malaysia after the Bogus MAI said that Government encouraged people to buy EEV. Honda Malaysia invested hundreds of millions to CKD the Jazz and Civic here.

Suddenly Government pull the plug on EEV and tax free hybrids.

So what is the purpose of the Bogus MAI? Mislead the public? Cost Car companies Hundreds of Millions?

    Please close down Bogus MAI!

  • Nissan Leaf RM200,000 vs RM58,000 on Feb 11, 2015 at 10:31 am

Nissan Leaf in Malaysia is about RM200,000. In this article, it says RM58,000. I thought EV cars got no tax when it comes to Malaysia?

What is Madani and Bogus MAI promoting then? They said buy EV moto and buy EV cars. But how can the EV car cost 4x in Malaysia?

Isn’t time for big fat cats like ETCM and DRB Hicom (Honda) and UMW (Toyota) give incentives for EV cars also in Malaysia? Enough of sucking our money with high car prices the past 25 years.

  • French Government is much better than Malaysia government.

They did not Increase the Diesel Tax to prevent people from driving diesel car.. They encourage ppl buy EV by giving approximately 40% rebate of the selling price!!

    Can Malaysia do this too?
In Malaysia, we have NON-subsidized Petrol and diesel + Highly Taxed Car.

@ French, RM60k u can get a Nice Nissan Leaf EV!

This is exactly what a caring government is all about. French govt. cares about the health of its citizens and makes the actual effort to reduce global warming. Here, our govt. only cares about fattening the cronies pockets; and hence continue to extort high car taxes from the struggling rakyat. After all the empty promises of car price reduction & to make efforts to reduce global warming; all of which are just empty talks. Now see the actual indifference of our bullshit leaders.

Do they have enough charging station for EV? How long it need to charge?

Is this a feasible and practical move considering the infrastructure is ready for EV
