Second-gen Audi R8 will shine with laser headlights

Audi zeigt Laser-Scheinwerfer des neuen R8

The new Audi R8 is all set for its Geneva Motor Show debut, with a recent leaked shot showing us a glimpse of the second-gen car. Now, Audi has released an official teaser image of the new R8, showing off the sports car’s headlamps and part of the lower bumper.

Audi wants to draw attention to the headlights, which are LEDs that can be supplemented by an optional laser high-beam lighting module. The special appeal of laser lighting is that it uses high-intensity laser diodes, which generate a lot of light energy from a very small component. Compared to LED high beams, laser high beams provide nearly twice the lighting range.

Each headlight contains one laser module that operates with four high-intensity laser diodes. This module bundles the four intense blue-light laser beams. Then a phosphor converter transforms the blue light into pure white light. An unique characteristic of the laser headlights is their blue light signature.

The laser high-beam made its debut last year in the Audi R8 LMX, a limited-edition of the outgoing R8. Shortly before that, it was used in the Audi R18 e-tron quattro race car at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Don’t need laser? Standard in the new R8 is an LED headlight system with 37 LEDs per headlight.

Car makers just claim it’s their development, but really it’s from one of their suppliers, like OSRAM or Hella, and Audi and BMW just use it.

Also I think BMW already used the laser lights in the i8?

Nothing new. Ford had the Ford Laser in the 80s. I remember that car well. Really sporty looking.

Jokes aside, the overall shape of the new R8 does seem like a nice evolution of the current sexy R8.
