GALLERY: 2016 Honda Pilot unveiled in Chicago

2016 Honda Pilot

The 2016 Honda Pilot has been officially revealed at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show. The third-generation crossover, which sits above the Honda CR-V and Honda HR-V, was earlier leaked online prior to its debut. Developed and built in North America, the Pilot also serves as a preview to the upcoming Honda Ridgeline.

In terms of looks, the 2016 Honda Pilot drops the ungainly, boxy outline of the second-gen model and replaces it with a more streamlined design. A horizontal, three-bar front grille is now flanked by (optional) LED projector head lamps with LED daytime running lights as well as an auto high beam function.

Elsewhere, a panoramic roof is available as an option for the first time on a Pilot, while style-conscious clients can opt for the optional 20-inch wheels. At the back, a tailgate-mounted spoiler and LED tail lamps round off the list of exterior upgrades.

Inside, the Pilot boasts enough room for eight occupants. On higher trim models, two second-row captain’s chairs are available, aiding accessibility to the last row. An eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system can be equipped with Honda’s Satellite-Linked Navigation System.

Under the hood, the third-gen Pilot is powered by 3.5 litre V6 with cylinder deactivation and start/stop technology. Oddly enough, Honda has refused to provide performance figures, but coupled to a 136 kg drop in weight, fuel consumption and performance will no doubt see an improvement.

As for transmission options, a six-speed automatic is standard, while a nine-speed auto makes an appearance on higher trim models. Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel drive being offered as an option. Under the Honda Sensing umbrella, a suite of safety options are available on the new Honda Pilot.

This includes Honda’s LaneWatch technology, blind spot indicators, a multi-angle rear view camera, adaptive cruise control and many more. The usual host of ABS, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and airbags for the driver and front passenger with side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions comes as standard.

    It’s huge!

Thing is, without a decent 2.0 Turbo engine, sadly it won’t be fond with Asian consumers due to the tax structure…

Can compete with CX-9 over here, both should have loads of space, but big SUV’s like CX-9 doesn’t sell well here, maybe because of road tax, and competition from other brands (recond Alphard, Vellfire, BMW X5)…
