Volvo S60 facelift launched – T4 RM222k, T5 RM269k

Volvo S60 Facelift 1

The facelifted Volvo S60 has been on display in showrooms since last month, and now the updated Swedish compact exec fighter has finally been officially launched in Malaysia in both T4 and T5 flavours.

We’ll start off with the prices. The lower-spec T4 comes in at RM221,888, the same as the pre-facelift, while the range-topping T5 – as was revealed previously – retails at RM268,888, RM7,000 more expensive than before. Both prices are on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, five years’ free service and five years’ free Volvo On Call roadside assist.

Unveiled to the world in 2013, the refreshed S60 gets a new bonnet with sharper creases, more angular headlights, a wider grille that loses the previous chrome surround and sleeker lower air intakes. Gone are the driving lights flanking the grille of the old car, replaced by LED daytime running lights mounted lower down on the bumper.

Volvo S60 Facelift 5

At the rear, the lower bumper insert has been revised, while the twin round tailpipes get new chrome finishers. New wheels should feature on both cars, with the T5 seen here wearing 17-inch “Sadia” alloy wheels, replacing the previous “Njord” rollers.

Inside, there’s a new black illuminated gear knob that replaces the previous transparent piece, revised illumination and silk metal air vent surrounds. The T5 also gets the new Digital Instrument Cluster with an eight-inch Adaptive Digital Display (as seen on the V40 and the facelifted XC60) and a DVD audio system with navigation and voice control.

Unlike our facelifted XC60, the updated S60 doesn’t come with Volvo’s new range of Drive-E engines, instead sticking with the existing T4 1.6 litre and T5 2.0 litre Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDi) four-pots that are related to Ford’s EcoBoost mills.

Volvo S60 Facelift 3

The T4’s B4164T motor produces 180 hp at 5,700 rpm and 240 Nm of torque between 1,600 and 5,000 rpm, while the T5’s B4204T7 mill delivers 240 hp at 5,500 rpm and 320 Nm between 1,800 and 5,000 rpm. As before, both engines are mated to a six-speed PowerShift wet dual-clutch transmission, sending power to the front wheels.

As you’d expect from a Volvo, the safety features on the new S60 have also been improved. City Safety autonomous braking system now works at speeds up to 50 km/h, while the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) is now radar- rather than camera-operated and incorporates Cross Traffic Alert (CTA). The T5 additionally gets Pedestrian Detection and Cyclist Detection, as well as Road Sign Information (RSI).

Five exterior colours are available for the facelifted Volvo S60 – Flamenco Red, Ice White, Ember Black, Electric Silver and Seashell. There’s also a sportier R-Design styling kit available as an option, along with a Polestar performance upgrade kit for the T4.

A volvo today is not like Volvo in the 90s. After Geely bought over Volvo, nearly every part of the Volvo is now Made in China.

When Geely bought over Volvo 5 years ago, they promised the world that Volvo would be 100% Swedish. But they lied. Now, Geely actually makes parts for Volvo.

Don’t believe me? go to the Volvo showroom and try to see every part. Every part is now Mad ein China. Even the Windscreens got the word Made in China on it.

The question is this. If overseas, the Volvo is cheap. So paying US$25,000 for it is no big deal. But in Malaysia, paying RM280k is big big money.

Are you willing to pay so much of money for a fully Made in China car?

Interior & Exterior looks dated. With 220k+ better go for 320i or wait for new Ford Mondeo. Both also more powerful than this T4..

Thing is, the S60 is just so so confused here.

For the price it is not worth it, why buy this when you get the rear drive BMW 3 series, a real peach to drive, or a Merc C Class for the price of T5.

For the T4, I’d rather take the BMW 316i, its just nicer. The Ford engines are really ancient now… Plus with PowerShift….

Or better yet, for the T4, might as well save up, go get the cheaper Mondeo. That looks like a real champ. And the rest of the cash, keep it in some investment or other.

  • if someone can effort 222k i can’t find a reason why getting this car…design is out, price is out, branding is out, technology and gadget is out…its just doesn’t tick the box apart from safety but doesn’t mean that the German rival is not safe as Volvo.

Anyway its a nice brand and my grandpa use to be Volvo fan but they just not quite keep up nowadays.

  • thats the poblem when some junior car companies try to buy older established brands, the new owner itself nothing , no engine, technology to offer…and thats whats happening to Lotus with P1

  • Good family car with a 1.6 engine T4 should be having an output much more powerful than Camry 2.4 or accord 2.4

Youngster will go for 316i ( 136 HP ONLY ) – not worth to pay for such low horsepower output , showoff but engine lack the power of volvo s60 T4 meaning less powerful.

Well gentle and middle age person with family prefer S60 more than 316i ( 180 hp) safe and powerful if affordability is there.

    my two cents
