Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE revealed in Geneva – plug-in hybrid concept previews next-gen CC

VW Sport Coupe GTE Geneva Live 17

Teased last week, the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE has now been unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show. Don’t let the ‘concept’ moniker fool you, though. It would appear that the Passat B8-based four-door coupe is here to serve as a preview to the next Volkswagen CC – despite the firm stating it sits a rung higher than the current CC.

Based on the MQB platform, the concept allows us a glimpse into the next phase of Volkswagen’s design language as the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE sports a front grille that melds seamlessly with the head lamps and the VW logo. The air intakes are flanked by C-shaped LED lights.

In profile, the car is equipped with 21-inch wheels that feature a turbine-like motif while the silhouette of the car sports an extremely sloping roofline thanks to the A-pillars being placed far back from the elongated bonnet. That swooping line continues on the rear where it blends in with the low-lying C-pillar.

At the rear, hints of the current CC can be seen in its tail lamp design while a subtle lip spoiler extends from the shortened rear deck. Elsewhere, dual exhaust tips are integrated into the rear bumper for a more cohesive (and relatively production-ready) look. The concept spans 4,869 mm in length, is 1,864 mm wide and stands at 1,407 mm.

Under the bonnet lies a conventional V6 TSI engine which is then hooked up to a pair of electric motors to form a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Total power output is quoted at a respectable 380 hp. The concept completes the century sprint in 5.2 seconds and powers on to 250 km/h while chalking up a fuel consumption figure of just 50 km/l.

The system also enables the Volkswagen Sport Coupe Concept GTE to travel on pure electric power for up to 50 km. Total operational range is quoted at 1,000 km – and no, that’s not a typo. The interior of the car also hints at what the next-gen VW cabins could look like.

A panoramic roof that spans the entire length of the cabin further adds a sense of space to the generous interior which is possible thanks to a wheelbase of 3,020 mm. Slim, horizontal air-con vents help shape the minimalistic centre stack, with only a large touchscreen sitting on the console – eliminating the need for buttons.

The instrument cluster also appears to be of the digital variety, replete with futuristic blue needles nestled inside the overall layout. The 2+2 layout may not exactly be as practical as a bench-type setup but the availability of two captain chairs, coupled to the aforementioned wheelbase length, would ensure acres of legroom. Elsewhere, rear-seat entertainment is taken care of in the form of two individual screens embedded into the front seats.
