Toyota Avensis facelift debuts at Geneva – full details

AVENSIS_DAY_01_DPL_2015_3-4_BLACK

Last month, it was announced that the facelifted Toyota Avensis would be making its world premiere at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, but precious little information was disclosed. Now that it has actually made its debut, Toyota has divulged full details regarding the updated Euro-market D-segment sedan and Touring Sports estate.

We’ve seen the changes around the front of the car – the T270 gets broader, slimmer LED headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights, a narrower upper grille and a much larger lower grille, while the fog light housings have been pushed outwards to make the car look wider. There’s also a newly-designed side sill garnish and updated 17- and 18-inch wheel designs.

It’s the rear that we have yet to see, and here, the facelifted Avensis receives new tail lights with LED light guides, a reshaped bootlid/tailgate featuring a new horizontal chrome trim piece that bridges the tail lights, as well as a reprofiled rear bumper.

AVENSIS_STUDIO_09_DPL_2015_3-4-REAR_BLACK

The interior sees a much more comprehensive revamp that brings the Avensis closer in line with newer stablemates like the Auris and Corolla. The dual-layer dashboard, twin-tube instrument cluster (with a 4.2-inch colour multi-info display on higher-end models), eight-inch touchscreen system and door cards are all-new, as is the steering wheel and gear knob; the latter is similar to that fitted to the facelifted Camry.

Toyota says that sensory quality and NVH has been increased – switchgear feel and operation has been improved, the graphics, symbols and backlighting has been made more consistent and satin chrome trim and upgraded upholstery choices promote a higher-quality appearance.

The seats have also been thoroughly revamped with a larger backrest, redesigned seat suspension mat, increased cushion angle and reshaped side bolsters for improved long-distance comfort and lateral support. Thicker insulation, new seals throughout the body, an integrated heater air duct seal lip and a dynamic damper on estate models should provide a noticeable decrease in cabin noise and vibration.

Euro 6-compliant engines include two new diesels and two revamped petrols. The 110 hp/270 Nm 1.6 litre D-4D oil burner with a six-speed manual replaces the older 2.0 litre mill and uses 10% less fuel, delivering a claimed 24.4 km per litre and emitting 108 grams per kilometre of CO2. There’s also a brand-new 141 hp/320 Nm 2.0 litre D-4D that consumes a combined 22.2 km per litre and emits 119 grams of CO2 per kilometre.

Improvements have also been made to the 130 hp/160 Nm 1.6 litre, 145 hp/180 Nm 1.8 litre and 150 hp/196 Nm 2.0 litre Valvematic petrol engines, as well as the Multidrive S CVT, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The chassis incorporates new strut bearing and support, improved springs, dampers and steering as well as a new piston valve design for the rear suspension for better ride and handling.

Safety-wise, all new Avensis models come as standard with laser- and camera-operated Toyota Safety Sense – which includes a Pre-Collision System, Lane Departure Alert, automatic high beam and Road Sign Assist – as automated emergency braking (AEB) is now required for a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

just love that you can buy a manual corolla/camry size car in europe

    • True to the statement. I think for a manual camry and corolla to exist in a market, the competition must have been fierced. Japanese, korean and european car manufacturers are fighting to be the best value for money people can buy. Thus, the manual option to keep the car price interesting.

But, some car manufacturer did not release all the geaebox variant in their line up. For instant, BMW M5 E60 manual 6speed, and newer M5,M6 both coupe and sedan.

I have a dream. Someday i might be able to buy a manual diesel powered small hatchback, that can achieve more than 25km/l in almost any driving condition, and not worrying about fuel too much.

      Anybody got extra AP?

In Europe pretty much all cars come as standard in all specs with a manual gearbox. Adding auto adds around RM 6-12k, and not all engines are available with auto. Many prefer to drive manual anyway, men and women alike (actually all European women I know prefer manual, while I know some men who prefer auto).

dig deep in the history and one will find Avensis is actually a Corona. Yes it does.

As in also, the Caldina is actually a Corona wagon/estate.

and the Vios has a long and rich history with previous models known as Soluna, Vitz, Yaris, Echo and also Tercel in 1980s.

Just compare to the local Camry… much nicer exterior. Much nicer interior. And then those safety features! You can’t get what the basis Avensis has even on the highest spec Camry. Let alone all the optional features that are available.

brother, camry and avensis are 2 different segment.

the difference is like Nissan Teana and Sylphy. in case that you dont know.

Wrong. The Yaris is same segment as Vios (the Vios used to be the sedan version of the Yaris, however the current Vios is based on the previous Vios, which is based on the then current (now outdated) Yaris.

The Auris and Altis are in the same segment… the Auris started as a renamed Corolla, as Corolla was a name that had a bad rep in Europe (only uncles drive…).

Avensis and Camry are in the same segment, though the Camry is a bit bigger. Both D segment though.

Its a shame u did not do some homework.

The Camry and teana both has similar 2775mmg wheelbase which qualifies them both as D segment cars

Sylphy has 2700mm wheelbase. Sylphy is not yet a D segment.

Avensis wheelbase is also 2700mm. Yes, it is a big car.but its not in the same segment as Camry.

You got it all wrong mate.

Thank you for your comments, but here is the homework.

First, D segment cars in Europe are defined as large family cars, while in the United States D segment cars are named as midsize cars. Obviously, these are the same segment cars, but named somewhat differently.

Second, speaking of Avensis and Camry, both are classified as midsize family/fleet cars in Europe and the United States respectively, practically putting them in the same segment, but in two different markets.

Third, Toyota sells Avensis in Europe and Camry in US and Asia as understood to prevent overlap and internal competition between these two cars. To note, Avensis effectively replaced Camry in Europe in early 2000s.

Fourth, the cars the Camry competes against where it is sold (US and Asian markets) are largely the same cars the Avensis competes against in the European market where it is sold, with some variations in the rival models depending on the geographic region. The have similar rivals.

Fifth, it can be thus inferred that despite any slight differences and stereotypes, Avensis and Camry are both D-segment family/fleet cars of Toyota, designed and sold to different regions of the world, competing largely against similar cars in their respective geographic regions. Their typical rivals are Ford Mondeo, Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Altima, Skoda Superb, Renault Talisman, Peugeot 508, Subaru Legacy, Honda Accord, Opel Insignia, Volkswagen Passat, Kia Optima, Hyundai i40 among others.

Sixth, in this segment, there are cars slightly larger and smaller than both Avensis and Camry (not just in terms of wheelbase only) and their specifications may also slightly vary within the segment.

Seventh, the segment in which they compete is called upon to perform a variety of functions where they may serve as family, fleet and business vehicles. These cars are neither too big, nor too small and are just the right balance between size, power and comfort level for both families and businesses.

            Thank you!

yes, toyota does struggle in europe due to european brand has a strong market hold. cars like european Ford. or VW. or Peugoet. Or Renault. Or Opel (Vauxhall in UK).

any Japanese car maker is struggling to outsell those continental makes and they are aware of these facts. even Honda and Nissan. they are there just to make their presence felt. thats all.

Japan has its own country to give the biggest support. and America. and Asia (middle east, south east asia, China (though not strong due past experience of Japanese invasion during 2nd world war when they killed Chinese ppl including in Malaysia).

      and also Australia.

That’s because Europeans have higher demands and standards. The Avensis is a good car, much better than the Camry, but Europeans are spoilt by choice. They can also get a Passat, or Mondeo, or Octavia/Superb, or Insignia, or 508, C5, … At least Toyota is still trying in Europe, Nissan has given up long ago, and Honda just did IIRC…

I assume 6 airbags and VSC would be standard that they even do not bother to mention them? As suspected, the problem is not Toyota, its UMW!!!!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0
    • kadajawi (Member) on Mar 05, 2015 at 10:33 pm

6 or more airbags, yes. But the problem is not UMW, it’s the buyers. UMW offers what buyers want. They could offer 6 airbags and ESC instead of bodykits and alloy rims, makes no difference to them. But Malaysians prefer bodykits and alloy rims. And leather seats. Safety is unfortunately not a big priority, otherwise Malaysians would only be buying Preve and Suprima, and top spec Iriz.

European customers demand good safety, that’s what sells cars. Mercedes actually does offer a car with 1 airbag in Germany, at this very moment. Base spec. They are not required by law to offer airbags at all. This particular model is one that the boss may buy for his employees, so if you have a lousy and stingy boss, that’s what he’ll get you.
