SPAD announces hike in taxi, express bus fares

easy-taxi-super-easy-taxi 260

As reported earlier, the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has announced a revised taxi and express bus fare structure today. While the flag down rate for budget taxis remain at RM3 in the Klang Valley (RM4 in Penang), the time and distance rates have now been revamped to cost 25 sen for every 200 metres or and/or every 36 seconds.

The flag down rate for Teksi1Malaysia, on the other hand, has been revised to RM4. It will now cost passengers 30 sen for every 200 metres travelled, as reported by The Star. Aside from taxis, express bus fares have also been confirmed to increase by 2.1 sen to 11.4 sen per kilometre travelled from April 1.

In reference to the SPAD fact sheet, this would mean a ticket price of RM25.30 for a journey from Kuala Lumpur Ipoh – an increase over the previous figure of RM20.60. The new prices are set to coincide with the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) at the start of next month.

A grace period of two months is offered to taxi drivers to calibrate their meters, of which they can then start charging according to the new rate. As for stage buses, no announcement has been made regarding a revamp of the fare structure.

SPAD chief executive, Mohd Nur Ismal Kamal, told Free Malaysia Today that the revised fares were likely to work in favour of the passengers as drivers would now be more willing to ferry them during peak hours. “(Before the hike)… taxi drivers (dealt) with the situation by not driving during peak hours,” he said.

The increase in the “time charge” has been implemented to compensate taxi drivers for “opportunity cost of travelling in congestion,” SPAD added. The last fare revision was executed in 2009 with Kamal stating that the SPAD was in a “tight spot” trying to offset the balance between affordability and sustainability.

Meanwhile, observers claim that the increase comes at a “less justifiable” moment whereby inflation has been on a downfall due to lowering oil prices. “I think this is not the right time for a fare hike. When inflation has been on a downtrend currently, it is hard for them (SPAD) to justify increasing public transport fares,” said Dr Yeah Kim Leng, an economist at the Malaysia University of Science and Technology, to The Edge.

Fuel price drop, Petronas not making profit. Government no money. Thus why GST comes to help (by squeezing us).

RM value drop like shit, import so expensive.

Of course everything is getting expensive. So do you still wanna spend more on car maintenance/repair, and get nothing return when you trade in?

I always said, you won’t go wrong with sushi cars.

Im ok to pay higher taxi fare IF the money goes to the driver, not the crony taxi company. SPAD, how about dismantling all the crony taxi lesen company, give the taxi drivers thier individual lesen? Everyone happy, driver happy, customer happy…only crony unhappy (Ptooi)

more than 50% of taxi owners are individual laa… tak baca YS Chan letters in CBT kaa? I prefer it is own by comp. better control, look at singapore, there are no individual taxi owner, all taxis are operated by Comp. and LTA took 10 years to transform the industry.

In Singapore all taxis are on superb condition, they also always use their metrs

In Malaysia half of red taxis are junk cars and in bad condition inside and should not be on the road on the condition they are in and they rarely use there meters – and will not transport you if you do not agree their outragious fare charges

Intil SPAD gets a grip of this the service will not improve

By not giving taxi licenses to any sector of the population, nor licences to operate public buses and any means of transportation throughout the country, and worse of the lot, refusing over the years till now to develope a modern and efficient
public transport system for the people at large, as in every thing else like cars or rice etc, it is very clear that the government only and always supports MONOPOLY market so that only their
cronies make big bucks. It is really a shame that Malaysians in general do not see that they are really the modern slaves in this country, slotting their whole life on a house, a car and kid’s tuition fess, and nothing else.
No wonder Malaysians like to flash their cars up and down the country, even if it is a junk!! But for what?

But life is more than a house, a car or many cars, and kid’s tuition fees. It means beating the forever changing system at higher costs.

Malaysians must accept the fact that the government, any member of them, does not work for the people. It is just the opposit, and we can not be proud of it. Look at our half-past six MPs and the crook tycoons,
each of them constantly looking for monopoly business to line their pockets, without any shame. Civility has already gone down the drain and it is dog eats dog environment now.

Wake up Malaysians, life will get tough and tougher in this uncaring country which also gets affected by fast changing world. We must try to be human to help each other. Sharing a car with your friendly neighbours does not degrade your social standing, and do not always complete a sentence by getting personal. Uber will be made illegal soon by the authority so as to keep the MONOPLY taxi firms fat and oil daily with money.

alooo be smart & use google to check ur facts laa, it is not about who owns the cab, it is about the attitude of the drivers, 50% of taxi’s owner are individual. If you take the cab at Subang Jaya komuter station, those refused to use the meter are individual owners (tgk dkt pintu cab). They are just plain greedy..

Due to new proton car upgrades for TAXI and EXPRESS BUS, they wanted to increase fares to ask malaysians to pay 40% more for fares, negotiating with rakyat and citizens and transport ministers. Old taxis and New Taxis asking for 40% increase based on taxi appearances challenge on which taxi can hike higher prices, old taxis or new taxis
