2015 Ford Ranger makes world debut in Thailand

Ford Ranger Facelift BKK 2015 22

Greetings from Impact Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok. The 2015 Bangkok International Motor Show begins tomorrow for the press, but Ford has unveiled the 2015 Ford Ranger facelift for the first time to selected media from the region this morning.

The refreshed Ranger T6 comes with an all-new, more macho face and bold grille, but that’s not the only thing new about it – a completely new dashboard is present as well, with a sharper design that echoes the newfound ruggedness of the exterior. This writer likes the new look and I’m guessing pick-up truck fans will do too.

Cosmetics aside, the new Ranger will go on sale with improved diesel powertrains with Start-Stop tech. Coupled with new electric power steering, the Ranger is quieter and up to 22% more fuel efficient, FoMoCo claims.

Three TDCi units will come with Malaysian-spec Rangers – the five-cylinder 3.2 Duratorq (updated EGR system, 197 hp, 470 Nm), a standard 2.2 Duratorq (now with 158 hp/385 Nm) and a new high-efficiency variant of the 2.2 with 129 hp. The latter is the one with the 22% better FC. A 2.5 Duratec petrol engine is available elsewhere.

In my experience, the current Ranger is the best truck to drive on tarmac, but Ford has seen fit to retune the suspension for better ride comfort and handling. New tech available include SYNC 2 connectivity and a suite of high-end driver assist systems such as Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control, Driver Impairment Monitor and front/rear parking sensors. Not all would be on all versions of the Malaysian spec, though.

The Ranger will continue to be built in three facilities globally, in Argentina, South Africa and Thailand. Ours will come from the AAT plant in Rayong, Thailand, as before. More to come, but for now, see it for yourself with our full live gallery, and also read our review of the pre-facelift Ranger T6.

By the way, the variant photographed live on the stand here is the XLT – the Wildtrak is not in attendance at the show, but you can play spot-the-difference with our spyshots from Thailand.

  • Those wheels look hideous, but the truck looks alright, wish the back was more different though.

Lane-Keeping-Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control? On a truck!

Now that is really impressive. It looks even better than before, not to say there was anything wrong with the old one, but Toyota and Nissan have some catching up to do…

Now, can we get a nice orange 3.2 WildTrak…. And a bit shorter waiting list too…

    • Ford keeps making one of the safest car in the world. But when come to Malaysia, don’t know these features will be available in our market. Hope SDAC not remove them, even when they keep them, the price also sky high.

Not a fan of the new dashboard design and an exterior that probably will take time to adapt compared to the existing model, but…the additional specs to the car in general and the speedometer is a big plus!

i think that is not the right color to show off the new face , a bright color should suit it alot better , that color in the pic is way too dark n hide all the flares it has…i like the interior , but im wondering can those trucks have abit more imagination when it comes to designing the rear , i know its quare n not much can be done , bt its so predictable…a rectangular slap of metal and two lights are each side…cmon designers , come up with sting a little bit different!

Part of the truck’s ability is to go offroad. More plasticky parts means more breaking when they’re caught up with something when offroading.

Besides, a truck is suppose to look rugged. Would you like it of the front of the truck looks damn fierce and rugged but the rear looks like a overly fancy Mazda BT-50 or Triton’s rounded rear?

Is that a fully customisable instrument panel? The front styling is an improvement over the pre-facelift in terms of look and functionality with those projector headlights. Hope it’s standard across the range.

You can get your hands on a Mitsubishi Storm Evo with a 3.0 V6 (petrol) nearly a decade ago. They are quite rare, for obvious reason. Running costs were high, even when petrol was quite cheap at that time.

  • Can someone at Ford explain why the Ranger’s interior looks much better then the to-be-released Everest? Ranger speaks utility, Everest shouts faux luxury.

The power figures we have published are correct; Bangkok Post has inexplicably used the current pre-facelift model figures.

My officemate bought a Ranger in 2013. it’s a 2.2L Manual. It’s a poweful and fast truck. But there is a down side – the spare parts are very expensive, and the service centers are not too many in Klang valley, hence the need to book and queue always. This is something the local distributor needs to seriously look into if they want to stay in the game, as so many other turcks are joining the fray, including from China.
While I really liked the exterior design of this new Ford truck, I would probably purchase a Toyota Hilux due to spare part cost and numerous service centers all over Malaysia, including Sabah and Sarawak.
In fact many modestly equipped workshop in small towns or kampungs can reapir a Toyota truck. And that is a big plus point.

By looking at the gear lever & odo panel, suggested no more dual clutch / s-mode for auto?
