2016 Kia Optima – first look at all-new model, NY debut

next-gen-kia-optima-first-image

After months of spyshots, a preview in the form of a concept and some official sketches, the world can finally have its first look at the next-generation 2016 Kia Optima. The car is all set to have its world debut at the upcoming 2015 New York International Auto Show (2015 NYIAS) this April.

From the sole official image here, it would appear that Kia has opted for an evolutionary approach to its styling with hints of the current TF model evident. The familiar Tiger Nose front grille now blends seamlessly into the slightly restyled head lamp units. The lower half sports a set of twin air intakes at each end.

While the aesthetics may appear familiar, under the skin of the 2016 Kia Optima is where things get a tad more revolutionary. For starters, the new car is expected to debut a new hybrid powertrain first previewed on the Optima T-Hybrid concept and more recently on the Kia Sportspace concept.

Which brings us to the next (possible) big deal on the new car – an estate Kia Optima. Judging from the looks of the Kia sportspace concept, we don’t see how it would be so difficult for Kia to introduce an estate version of its D-segment competitor since foes such as the Mazda 6 and Peugeot 508 already offer this body style.

Elsewhere, things are slightly more muddled. While no solid information has been divulged regarding the interior, the layout teased on the Sportspace concept does gel well with Kia’s intentions to introduce a “more spacious, class-up interior.” April can’t come soon enough.

        • @ John, Feel for Proton. Kea is almost the same age as Proton. Toyota is a grand father in this industry, yet Toyota feels pressured from brands like Kia … lol

Still remember the Proton design principles:
          1. Looks Good
          2. Sounds Good
          3. Promise Good
          4. But never Good

Don’t be deceived by the outlook. A beautiful car can’t get you nowhere while a good car (comfort, fuel saving, reliable, good RV) can remind you of your success every time you start the car.

The current K5 optima, remains by far the better looking D-segments out there. Iam not sure about this new successor, first impression, the clean and consistent front seems to make way for a more inconsistent and rounder approach. Need more views to give a definitive opinion.

Thou the biggest gripe of the K5 remains the interior so hopefully this gen will sort it out, the concept seems to indicate something promising.

Kia used to be “inspired” by Audi, it has now been greatly inspired by Merc it seems, especially from the look of the grille.

Driven the XV50 Camry and K5 Optima. Lookwise, the K5 steals the show hands down. And the amount of equipment is generous compared to the bare Camry. However, once the car is moving, you will notice the K5 lacks the driving dynamic’s panache of the XV50. Thats horrendous when considering that the XV50 Camry already handled like a boat compared to other conti made such as the Passat. The Koreans should spent more time and resources to improve their vehicle dynamics. We already know that they can design beautiful car and offer lots of gadget to lured people away from other Jap’s sedan. However they are trying to hard on that while neglecting other important areas, which is the engineering part.

Bro,when buying car, some look for comfort, some look for the value for their money, some look for design, some look for brand and some look for RV.
Please name any car which provide you all in the RM200k category?
No need to bash one another as each car are unique in its own way.

@Mr.George, i dont think Mr.Hazimiey’s post sounded like a bash. It is just a pure apple to apple comparison,as mentioned the Optima is going against the likes of XV50 and others. The readers out there including me myself haven’t had by chance to test drive an Optima even of the Old Kia. It’s a good environment here at Paultan.com where drivers can share their experience with various cars, crucial tho, the driving dynamics. Exterior-wise, even a toddler can drool all day long when a Hyundai Coupe of the Old Age passes by :)
