KL City Grand Prix – driver’s view of proposed circuit

Remember the KL City Grand Prix, the launch of which we covered in December? Yup, between August 7 and 9, Kuala Lumpur is set to see GT racing teams, their drivers and their cars do battle on her streets, within a specially-designed 3.2 km street circuit in the KLCC area.

With the action only five months away, organiser GT Global Race (M) Sdn Bhd has released a TVC outlining the event and its highlights. The KL City Grand Prix is estimated by PricewaterhouseCoopers to draw 100,000 new visitors to the country, create over 6,300 jobs from the first event and raise RM750 million in national income.

We’ve also included a video of the proposed circuit from a driver’s view. The planned 11-turn circuit starts at KLCC Suria and proceeds through Jalan P Ramlee, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Pinang before returning to the chequered flag. It should certainly make for quite a spectacle.

Chaired by YAM Tunku Naquiyuddin ibni Tuanku Ja’afar and headed by president and CEO M. Arrasu, GT Global Race has engaged Shanghai Top Speed to stage selected rounds of certain international race events in KL, including the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Cup, Formula Masters and Scirocco Cup.

Partners include DBKL (for exclusive rights to hold the KL City Grand Prix for five years), AAM (for race organisation and FIA homologation), plus UK-based APEX and Australia-based KBR (for street circuit design and development).

Horsepower-bristling GT machines thundering through the streets of KL? We can’t wait!

tbf, city/street grand prix is all about hype but the racing itself most of the time is boring and processional

This track doesn’t look attractive, so many left turns and one only for right turns, the bends is also minimal and long stretch of straight track. Boring…

Hahaha…. Raise RM750million in national income? For whom? Selected few?
6300 jobs? Really? Goes to whom? Malaysians or mostly foreigners? Care to elaborate…
Btw, Messrs PwC what about lost time and productivities of Klang Valley residents due to traffic jams and gridlock over that weekend? Care to tell the world about that also? Aiyooo if tell one side of story sure everything can go ahead one…. But in this case the net impact is more negatives than positives…

Another point to add… If u want to copy Singapore bcos of their street circuit GP then havent u organisers realised first and foremost they have a better public transportation ?
So copy that first before coming up with this street circuit GT racing idea….

Please get rid of such event in KL, go to Sepang or better still Putrajaya. The occasional marathon etc in KL is enough to spoil my weekend.

anyone here actually go to Sepang Circuits race events regularly? as spectators.. and not just for F1, motogp, and SBK. Sepang has always been very poorly spectated in comparison with other circuit events in the region.. I see this KL GP as a good “experiment” to see if a street circuit in the middle of the city can fulfill whats been missing from Sepang.

When they setup the formula-e in Putrajaya, it took them quite sometime to put the barriers (probably a month) and then there’s also time for them to take the barriers down. This is Putrajaya where the traffics is not so bad other than the short period of rush hour in the morning and evening. Do it in the heart of KL and this going to be a nightmare for commuters leading to the events and also after.

  • 750millions?? Seriously? Or some mathematics error there? 100,000 “new” visitors? Wow! Oh really? Even Lousy Sepang management couldn’t made that, but AAM can? Not only takes time to set up but the cost to install/barricade the area with those FIA-approved gates is NOT CHEAP! Not normal fence will do, ok? I can see another money-wasting “event” just to “TUNJUK MUKA” regardless of the event is worth to invest or not… I guess DBKL earn quite a lot $$$ from this event since they proposed to build their EXTREMEly EXPENSIVE building that exposed recently?
