2015 Mazda 2 gets a four-star Euro NCAP safety rating

The 2015 Mazda 2 Hatch has officially been rated four stars in Euro NCAP – the B-segmenter garnered respectable scores of 86% for adult protection, 78% for child protection and 84% for pedestrian protection, but a 64% safety assist score pulled down its overall rating.

The variant tested was the 1.5 Core, incorporating front, head and side airbags, Isofix, stability control and an active bonnet as standard. Autonomous city braking is available as an option, but not fitted to the test car, and high-speed emergency braking is not available at all.

Autonomous emergency braking is a pre-requisite for five stars here, and according to Euro NCAP, because the low-speed system “is not standard equipment, (it) did not qualify for inclusion in the assessment.”

Worth noting is the fact that the Mazda 2 scored maximum points in the severe pole impact test, in which the car is propelled sideways at 32 km/h into a rigid pole. Also, in the frontal offset barrier test, the passenger compartment remained stable, and max points were given for passenger dummy protection.

However, a fraction of a point was deducted for the driver’s leg (owing to the absence of knee airbags), and reduced whiplash protection for rear passengers is mentioned.

In Malaysia, the Mazda 2 Hatch and Sedan comes with two airbags as standard. You can look at the full Mazda 2 Euro NCAP crash test report on CarBase.my.

Why Proton still selling 2008 Saga in 2015? Why can’t compare if it is still selling? You know that the outdated Saga you spoke of is still Proton’s best seller, right?

Not the one sold in Malaysia. With only 2 airbags it will fail in the side and pole impact tests.

I think more like 0 star. Fail in side and pole impact, passengers dead. How can award any stars?

No surprise, even its flagship big brother the Mazda6 got only ‘acceptable’ on small overlap. Let alone this one. Mazda just goes for aesthetic only these days to boast sales..

Got feeling flame is coming in..

“Mazda just goes for aesthetic only these days to boast sales..”

That statement of yours is out of proportion and baseless.

The Mazda2 got 4 stars because autonomous braking isn’t standard (maybe missing on the lowest spec or only available as a cost option, for example). The safety cell itself is strong. The Mazda6 got an acceptable rating on a tough test. Being acceptable means that it passed the test but it’s not the best that it can be and there is room for them to improve. They messed up somewhere for the Mazda6 as the Mazda3 got itself a ‘Good’ rating out of the small front overlap. In addition, despite the ‘Acceptable’ rating, the Mazda6 still netted for itself the Top Safety Pick+ award:
      http://www.iihs.org/iihs/ratings/vehicle/v/mazda/6-4-door-sedan/2015#jump-to

So, please, look at the overall picture before focusing on a single imperfection.

As an aside, of the many non-luxury Japanese D-segmenters in Malaysia, the Mazda is one of the few that has a full suite of advanced active safety features. Improving aesthetics only for boosting sales? Its safety kit is far more extensive than the T, H and N D-segmenters.

I am not out to flame you. I just want to dispel your baseless accusation.

That’s the Malaysian version (the Malaysian version is vastly inferior to the European one in terms of kit) and also one of the few instances where Bermaz contradict themselves. Elsewhere, they’ve done a pretty good job…

you don’t send a car for ncap testing.. Euro NCAP acquires the car anonymously by themselves for testing.

also.. the mazda 2 did well for 4 stars. the benchmark for euro ncap has risen a lot this year making many new safety technologies a must to get 5 stars.. im very sure if the mazda 2 was tested with last years ncap requirements.. it could very well have scored 5 stars.

They have to offer it in Europe, then EuroNCAP will buy and test if they think it is important/interesting enough.

  • Malaysia-spec cars dun need these features, waste money only. Malaysians only care about timing chain and high RV cuz they say they can “ukur baju sendiri” just like they dun need to buy life insurance.

Would hope euro ncap would have different score for different levels of equipment. At least then overseas buyers like us can gauge how much better (for this case worse) is the safety equipment available for other countries. My guess with 2 airbags the maximum stars they would give would be only 3

4 stars don’t apply to Malaysian version. No curtain, side airbags and AEB you’ll be lucky to 2 stars.
