In November last year, we reported that an uber Golf, dubbed the R 400, was mooted for production. Now, as understood by CAR UK, the Volkswagen Golf R420 has been given the official production thumbs up. The good news was confirmed by none other than Volkswagen’s powertrain honcho, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neusser.
First, a bit of a recap for those not too familiar with what’s going on. Back in April 2014, Volkswagen revealed the Golf R 400 Concept which (surprise, surprise) consisted mainly of parts sourced from production vehicles, albeit with a dash of racing technology. Still, the overall product appeared as if it was ready for production, fuelling production rumours further.
So why the slight name change? According to Volkswagen, the Golf R420 will be the first production car to feature the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine from the Audi TT quattro sport concept. While exact power figures remain a mystery, the public can expect the R420 to possess more than 400 hp.
On the Golf R 400, power was transferred to all four corners via a six-speed DSG gearbox so expect similar a similar mention in the R420’s brochure later on. Performance figures for the R 400 include a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds and an electronically limited top whack of 250 km/h.
Looks wise, the Volkswagen Golf R420 is expected shun the dramatic looks of its rivals (we’re looking at you, Ford Focus RS) and adopt a relatively restrained bodykit coupled to “a new spoiler and aero pack with splitters and extra addenda.” Look closer and one will likely spot the required larger brake discs.
While no confirmed date has been set for its debut, word on the vine is that the Golf R420 is slated for a Frankfurt appearance in September, deliveries are scheduled to take place in late 2015 or early 2016, at the latest. Prices for the 400+ hp Golf are rumoured to begin at around €50,000 (RM193,755).

A Golf R420? Volkswagen blaze it!
Our Toyota 4 speed gearbox is the best! Vios uses for 13 years still happy selling and people happy buying.
I was expecting this to have the same engine & drivetrain and the RS3
When come to Malaysia, 150km/h speed limit will be legalised but top speed only 110km/h.
You are saying it like every other country have 300km/h speed limit..accept the fact that not everyone can handle +150km/h, especially not those idiots that can’t even properly use the signal lights.
They can buy Golf R 420 cheaper than what we paying for GTi here
Haihh.. Very good spec in a boring looks..
just plain dull boring..
designed for 50s uncle to speed.
A45 AMG with 355 horses from its 2 liter engine already have noticeable turbo lag. How about this one with 400 ponies?
Drivng a high strung turbo car and complaining about lag?
Maybe you should drive the car properly. How about keeping the revs in the powerband or use the correct gears.
wow 0-100 in under 4 seconds?
Book me in. This car is best used for racing at MRR2. Lets show those wiralutions and sagalutions who is da real boss
Dont left out d dugongian n citylion…always act like a boss too
The price for this R420 buy 4 cheapest Vios already. With that, on any highway, you can trap R420 in the middle. So is going no way la.
Such an awesome car. Don’t think it will be coming to Malaysia though and probably wont be able to afford it too.
Golf R about RM300k+, how much this over 400hp cost?
Come on, no DSG please. Use wet clutch. DSG will fail again in this regional weather condition.
dont talk rubbish..the only problem of DSG is the dry clutch the one use in 1.4tsi.. Golf has been in 6th generation (using wet clutch) and first time doing cheap clutch for 1.4tsi which is Dry. now no more problem because that is the first doing for smaller CC. the 2.0 dsg gearbox is totally different from 1.4 one…when switching 3k RPM u can clearly hear the PUMM sound. Stimm wo hear that sound
some “SMART” people talking sh*t here, lololol
The new batches of vw are using either manual or a 6 speed wet clutch. Also, VW group ady announced the dsg is solved. There is nothing to do with the weather…
Volkswagen is a German brand where only the old man will believe it’s a good brand.
with the oldies In and Out Styling, frankly speaking this is designed for the 50s and up Uncle and Granpa to speed.
A fast looking car does not a fast car make.
Some people prefer a low profile.
Its what’s under the hood that is more important.
I grew up in the middle of the big winged, big wheels, ricer lala mobile craze. I always prefered low profile in all my cars. You don’t want every blinged out honda to want to race you each set of lights.
Those who know, will know just what a monster you have.
I have gone as far as “downgraded” from a Camaro V8 to a 4 cyc turbo because the Camaro was too flashy (also too loud, too big).
Ahem, DSG also failing in UK and China, among other countries, so dont blame the weather.
Two of my friends driving a Polo Gti and Golf Tsi, both engines kaput, need to change new unit.
Go read up.
Sekejap cakap DSG … Sekejap engine …
talk east talk west … and talk cock la
This is ugly.. rm300k for a rm150k golf look?
Appreaciate whats underneath the hood and body.
Car guys dont speak like how you did. Only ricers do.
Awesome performance plus nice looking(interior & exterior). I have no idea why so many readers complaining about the style… For me, it’s good. Different people have different point of view. XD
