Mercedes-Benz has announced a new application for the much-hyped Apple Watch, following in the footsteps of BMW and Volkswagen. Dubbed the MB Companion App, it differentiates itself from the competition by adding door-to-door navigation for first and last mile travel on foot.
Starting from the Apple Watch, the app provides walking directions to the car, and the destination inputed by the driver is transferred to the vehicle’s COMAND Online infotainment system once it is started up. As the driver parks and leaves the vehicle, the smartwatch picks up navigational duties again and directs them straight to the final destination.
The MB Companion App – developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz Research & Development North America (MBRDNA) in Silicon Valley – will be compatible with COMAND Online-equipped C- and S-Class models starting this autumn, and on other models soon. The incorporation of vehicle information such as fuel level, range, maintenance codes and odometer readings into the app are also planned for the near future.
