After what has seemed like an eternity (the car was previewed in Malaysia as early as mid-2014), the second-gen Hyundai Genesis finally launches in Malaysia, bringing along with it a level of style, luxury and equipment usually only found in premium-brand offerings.
It’s perhaps fitting, then, that you won’t find a single Hyundai logo anywhere on the car; just the Genesis crest, for it is a grade above. Under the expansive bonnet lurks a direct-injected 3.8 litre V6 GDI engine that sends 315 PS at 6,000 rpm and 397 Nm of torque at 5,000 rpm to the rear wheels via an eight-speed auto. This is actually the biggest of three V6 GDI engines available on the Genesis (the others being 3.0 and 3.3 litre units).
The full-size luxury sedan measures 4,990 mm long, 1,890 mm wide and 1,480 mm tall. Its 3,010 mm wheelbase places it between the Mercedes E-Class‘ 2,874 mm and the long-wheelbase S-Class‘ 3,165 mm, while being 205 mm longer than the LF Sonata’s.
The Fluidic Sculpture 2.0-styled vehicle adopts electronically-controlled multi-link suspension front and rear; the damper settings change according to the Drive Mode selected. Front-ventilated disc and rear-solid disc brakes hide behind 245/55 R18 alloys. Electric power steering, of course.
Regarding lighting, there are self-levelling HID headlamps with cornering, LED fog lamps and LED combination tail lamps. You’ll find puddle lamps (projecting the Genesis logo) and door handle lights, too. Like the Sonata, there’s Smart Trunk – stay near the rear bumper with the key about your person and the boot automatically opens, revealing 433 litres of storage. The boot lid is powered as well, and the doors have a soft-closing mechanism.
Enter the vehicle to a really rather plush environment. Two interior choices are available at no extra cost – black, and beige two-tone (which you saw on the LHD preview car). The wood trim on the black interior is also slightly darker. Take it all in – the head-up display (shows speed, cruise control and side/rear warning info), power-adjustable steering wheel with memory and shift paddles, adaptive cruise control, electric parking brake and the seven-inch Supervision TFT LCD between the dials.
A Smart Parking Assist System provides auto parallel and perpendicular parking, while Drive Mode offers Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow modes that influence the steering, gearbox, throttle, and suspension. You sink into ventilated leather seats, which are eight-way power adjustable with memory, powered lumbar and powered extendable thigh support.
Also on are keyless entry and start, auto dual-zone air-con with ioniser, cabin CO2 sensor and rear vents, auto lights and wipers, pull-up rear side blinds, a powered rear blind, a panoramic sunroof and a tyre pressure monitoring system. Both the wing and inside rear-view mirrors are electro-chromatic. The rear centre armrest incorporates a cubbyhole and a control centre – the bosses can control audio, ventilation, door locks, rear blind and power slide/recline from here.
The front passenger seat can also be moved via switches on the side of the backrest. Infotainment is provided by an eight-inch touch-screen with AUX, USB, Bluetooth, reverse camera display and Around View Monitor, while a Lexicon Discrete Logic 7 Surround audio system provides sound through 14 speakers.
So much kit, and that’s before we even get to safety. As you’d expect, it’s loaded in this aspect – our Hyundai Genesis comes with nine airbags (two front, two front side, two rear side, two curtain, driver’s knee), ESC, VSM, Advanced Traction Cornering Control, Hill Start Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Active Bonnet System, Pre-Safety Belt, and Blind Spot Detection. The car actually achieved the highest score in ANCAP’s 21-year history, along with a maximum five-star crash safety rating.
The price to pay for all this is RM388,922, OTR with GST and without insurance (or RM399,888 with insurance), placing it pretty much in E-Class/5 Series territory. Like with the Sonata, the Genesis offers, on top of the standard five-year/300,000 km warranty, an eight-year/300,000 km engine and gearbox warranty for first-hand owners.
There’s more – first-hand Genesis owners will enjoy five years/100,000 km of free service. Also, a two-year free Leader Card membership (Sonata and Santa Fe offer just one year) offers four free chauffeur service passes for travel between major airports and the Klang Valley, four free visits to the Plaza Premium Lounge at selected major airports in Malaysia, plus other privileges including personalised hotel bookings, travel arrangements and showroom VIP lounge access.
The launch took place at Hyundai-Sime Darby’s new flagship GDSI (Global Dealership Space Identity) 3S centre on Old Klang Road – the first of its kind in South East Asia. The modern RM9.5 million, 38,000 sq ft, three-storey facility features lounges for customers and VIPs, plus 20 service bays. See CarBase.my for full Hyundai Genesis specifications, equipment, warranty details and more.

A kimchi for RM389k? Same like RM150k for a Proton! Give me a break!
Buy this, you will show me your super sour face in a year or later. your call
Lucky Sam bought his son saga at RM 39k last year.
If I have junk at home, I don’t mind give you for free. Come knock my door!
OMG…Holy expensive and boring design….Better buy Jap or Ger car loh…I think only korean will support this only.
Poor UMW low Life. Cannot even spell properly. What is dowh? No wonder sales of Toyota are downhill.
Staff don’t know how to spell even.
Price starting from USD38k (RM141k) in the US. Malaysians mcm earning 3x the US’
but Toyota doesn`t have RV!!!
Almost RM400K for Hyundai.. You need to be K-pop die-hard-fan to buy this. Pass, next car pls.
Toyota should learn to put safety equipment and more airbags in their Camry. Learn from Hyundai pls.
OH please!!!! I’ve seen you everywhere and no matter what topic of car…your comment is still stuck on negativity of Toyota. You dislike the badge so much is because you can’t afford one or you really had a very bad experience with one or to do with your ex who left you for a Toyota guy??
Please stick to the topic.
OMG, you want to share Sam Loo (ori1)’s dildo is it?
Nobody would buy rebadged Proton Perdana at RM120K price also. Equally ridiculous not worth it. Better buy that huge china MPV 11-seater Maxus G10.
The car was never on sale. Solely for gov fleet. Gila ke?
That’s for the sake of commenting p1, when hate p1, everything he wants to blame p1, badmouth p1. Even sakit perut also blame p1.
Come on get a life dude.
People like this are funny. Look at badge, look at price, and think “this brand can no way command such a price” without even considering the whole package. So you’d rather be conned by richer businessmen, paying more but getting less.
Hyundai (and Kia) might still not be respected in Malaysia but in the West, people are starting to see the progress they’ve made with their cars. Malaysians have yet to catch up.
That’s why moving coffin p2 and Toyota can still make money here
the brand cant be wrong. the car is not that bad. it’s just more to realistic price and engine spec. if they put 2.0 turbo or 2.5 turbo..the chances is higher. and the price doesnt exceed 300k.
Its obvious u know nuts about cars. There is a reason why its cheap . Nothing good is cheap and nothing cheap is good.
If you keep this philosophy in your mind, u will never make any mistakes buying stuff.
This car might have won awards, is luxurious and yes has all the bells and whistles, but no where is it close to the prestige and the class of the S-class, 7 series etc etc.
A simple look into the cabin of this car and u can see so many Korean design cues which look cheap and ugly for a 400k car.
Its in the details where the Mercs and BMWs and Bentleys win the day. The Koreans cant even make a good C segment car( Kia Cerato and Elantra are hopeless cars) and here you are saying trusting them on a 400k car? LOL
Yes no doubt the Koreans have progressed from their yesteryears but the problem still remains, they are where the Japs & Germans were 10 years ago.
So there you have it, nobody should buy Korean because its just plain stupid and if you buy one, be prepared to dump in for a Jap sooner or later.
“So you’d rather be conned by richer businessmen, paying more but getting less.”
Wow that was an interesting way of looking at it…
As a typical Malaysian I hereby announce that I will plagiarize this sentence from this moment onwards :3
take the positive side maybe this cars is not CKD yet but after they CKD it maybe it will be better price
Only for chauffeur driven. Too big for me to drive.
Which categories should i compare this car with?Mercedes S calss?BMW 7 series?
is this a legendary Hyundai ever made?
This price tag, how many of the rich man willing to consider to get it?
This is more like those long wheelbase E class and 5 series that they sell in China. the Hyundai that compete with s class is called Equus
without Paul tan script and when i just look at photo at the first glance, i thought this is Mazda 6 facelift. Korea still cant shake off copy and paste habit, lazy Hyundai designer trying to earn my RM389k, no way……
Dude, this model was launched in 2013, almost the same time Mazda 6 was launched, how does it make a copy and paste ?
Gt ur facts right before trashing. 1st it doesnt look like a mazda 6. 2nd it was the 6’s arse tat looks like a 2010 sonata! And 3rd ur mazda 6 is not even in this level
that gear knob doesn’t fit the pricetag
Not bad, feels American luxury.
Introduce the entry level 3.0 V6 for the reach for more Malaysians, thanks to the ridiculous road tax structure. Priced it below RM300k to entice German executive car owners. Six cylinders is luxury. Four cylinders are for compact hatchbacks.
Joke of the decade i think.
400k for this Korean crap. Cant even design a nicer gearknob and dare to price it 400k.
Interior is hideous and cheapo looking . U sell 120k oso i wont buy this crap.
3.8L might sound big but as usual , its a lousy engine with poor pickup and poor FC.
Koreans always exxagerate their spec sheets.
400k? As them fly kite!
Still so many Korean car haters tsk tsk. This car already shamed all the top dogs in safety aspect. Highest ANCAP score + maximum 5 star crash safety rating.
Iriz also good ANCAP score and good star crash safety rating,
Its a bloody luxurious tank from Korea..
Pheww…almost had a heart sTroke there when i saw that grand number. Seriously a hyundai no matter how you lap it up. I don’t think Malaysians are ready yet to pay that kind of bucks for an already inferior brand cmpare to the japs and conti make.
Better take bmw with 5 years warranty unlimited mileage!
Itu harga Sime-Darby.. Kalau tak nak takpe
82 HP per litre! Sounds like yesteryear engine. What a drag!!
name me any NA engine that can deliver better HP than that
Toyota GT-86, 200hp from a NA 2L engine.
Incidentally, I just past by the new outlet an hour ago..
Somehow or rather, the Malaysian price makes no sense at all….the same can be said for the cars under Sime Darby (skimpy and marked up)
Its way to close to the E200 (which is cheaper)/E250. The price spread of the Genesis in US is a lot wider. A fully loaded Genesis is a few grand cheaper than an Entry level E250.
Probably going to end up as Sime Darby company cars.
389k.
Ahahahahahahahahaha
RM400k for a Korean??
Better get a Merc, BM or Lexus… Ada gaya pakai ni kereta..
Honestly…
A 400k Korean make?
I have viewed the LHD car privately in the early part of the year, that was with the beige interior and the matte finish wood.
Now, as a car, on paper, it looks fantastic. Pull off the badges and it would pass as an Infiniti or Lexus.
But in application, there are some improvements needed. Interior feels alright, but the cooling seats were not cool enough on a hot day. Also, while the leather felt good (if it was a Merc) for the price, for a Hyundai at that price, I would have appreciated slightly better.
But the V6 was pretty good sounding, and it was dead quiet. And boy was it nicer than the Lexus ES inside….
Its a very handsome car in my eyes. Should have a comfortable & cushy ride. But the E Class and Lexus GS is still tops in the luxury department (that GS dashboard is soft enough to sleep on). Handling won’t trouble the Germans and the GS either. But doubt any driver will be pushing hard such a large car around the twisties. For them, this will be more of a highway cruiser.
Its closest competitor is the GS350 (RM470k) and E400 (RM494k). Both cars cost way more. But they have other more affordable cars in the range (GS250, E250/E200) which actually cost almost similar to the Genesis.
While its a good effort, the price tag is highish for a Korean car. Lets face it, Malaysians will usually only consider a German car for anything above RM200k. Even Lexus cars are rare here, except for the RX & CT. Tough sell for Hyundai Sime Darby, this one. All the best to them.
Well said, although having sat in a fully loaded ES i personally find it to have a better interior than the W221 S class.
I wouldn’t know about overseas, but coming from a korean car owner even I would not choose the Genesis over a 520i…
But compared to the E200/250? Why not, I find Mercedes’s current C class to have a much bigger road presence compared to the E. (No idea why)
Well, its all personal preference really. But Im sure we all echo the same sentiment over here that the price is a little too high. ~340k OTR would make it a better attention stealer in terms of price and value.
The Lexus ES would be my choice. More prestigious and a much safer choice compared to a Korean car.
Anyway, I honour the Koreans for the effort and guts.
Talking about “safer”:
“The car actually achieved the highest score in ANCAP’s 21-year history, along with a maximum five-star crash safety rating.”
Considering it as a Hyundai for nearly RM400K. E-Class better
From far wah is new bentley. Looks nice. Look nearer aiseiii is korean plastic.
Sam Loor! what is the resale value of this cabbage after 6 months?
an E400 with a road-tax friendlier 3.0 twin turbo v6 would be the definitive choice….
Malaysia is not ready for a big-engined hyundai north up the 200k mark…
Heres what Mr Cooley thinks of the Genesis. Don’t blame Hyundai, blame SDAC for the insane price.
Heres what Mr Cooley thinks of the Genesis. Don’t blame Hyundai, blame SDAC for the insane price https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBh03VCOGk0
Hey! RM389k, WTF!
I thought somebody said Hyundai/Kia got tongkat cuz alredi national car!
So why cant I get the Genesis at Perdana prices!
PR macai tipu-ed me!
I think it means got tongkat at their respective countries
Nope. In an earlier article somebody brought up that Toyota cant give 6 airbags cuz dun have tongkat, but when I point out that Picanto has more safety features for cheaper price, another macai confirmed that Hyundai/Kia is MY national car and oso got tongkat.
So where is my goddam Genesis at Perdana prices you penipu scammer PR macai!
Reading Same Lorr’s comments is much more entertaining than the article itself.
You must 4 speeder and old engine fan. Ok use it until year 2183
Don’t blame the Toyota salesman.. they are too free cause nobody going into showroom. So what they do is bad mouthing on every other car brands.
All they talk about is just RV without realising even Proton cars now are safer than theirs, apart from Hyundai, Kia, Honda, and Ford.
I bet 99% of the people yang berkokok here dun have enough money to buy this car…talk big only
I will buy this car 1 year later for RM30k
if u buy this car, people will say you bought a poor man’s S-class.
I will buy this car at Perdana prices but i was scammed by PR macai!
At a glance of the front photo, i thought i was looking at a new Aston Martin car. Then when i look closer, why there is genesis written front the emblem, i was ohhh. LOL
genesis doesnt sound prestige to me. if i am a rich pipu i’d rather buy a merc E n drive myself rather than be chauffered in this car.
this car just for old man,
What the heck with the engine and the pricing?
This is Malaysia, not United States of America, why so crazy bring in a 3.8L car ? Malaysia is just like Europe, smaller engine turbocharged car is prefered over big cc NA. Almost 400k might as well get a BMW 5 series. At least the 2L roadtax also 14 times cheaper than a 3.8L car (RM5631).
Yeah…Like one of the poster here mentioned, its most likely just a vanity project as a company car for one of Sime Darby’s directors or something. :(
*sigh*
sure lot of ppl say good….but will u buy this over a e clas hybrid?
All Hyundai models are much better than the looooousy “kosong” Toyota.
Hyundai = Samsung. Toyota = Nokia.
But Samsung always crash with their phones and electrical parts burning for household items leh???
Omg look at that bottom of the letter gear box so old school
I rather go for c class for this price
should bring 3.0GDI to here, more cheaper road tax, 3.8L road tax is killing !
With this kind of price and such a big cc for the engine, is really a very tough sell here. The roadtax for company registration is not favourable.
The only way is to position this with the S Class and 7 series so that it will look some what a bargain.
Position it lower, and you have to decide in between merc E300 hybrid, or even the Lexus ES250.
The odds are against this car.
No wonder we still far behind, keep bashing others while we do nothing to improve ourselves
