Just less than a week after its sedan sibling was caught with little to no camouflage, a prototype of the B9 Audi A4 Avant has been captured once again – this time shedding a bits of camouflage to reveal the front end as well as shape of its rear window. Those hoping to see more skin will be disappointed, to say the least.
While the slightly exposed front end is expected to mirror its sedan counterpart down to the most minute detail (Singleframe front grille à la Typ 8S Audi TT included), the differences become more evident the moment one trails his/her eyes further back – no amount of camouflage can conceal its elongated cargo bay coupled to a lengthened rear overhang and roof rails.
A closer look will disclose a wider rear track as well as a more coupe-like roofline compared to the outgoing A4 Avant. As mentioned, the B9 Audi A4 Avant will likely sport the same stylised, angular head and tail lamps as revealed by the undisguised sedan mule.
On the inside, expect an uncluttered layout with the deletion of most of the physical buttons on the centre console, replaced by a dash-mounted touchscreen system instead. The new car is also expected to feature Audi’s virtual cockpit and an Audi Q7-esque gear selector.
Like the sedan, the A4 Avant will ride on a variation of the MQB platform, dubbed MQB Evo. Said platform was previewed earlier on in the Audi Sport quattro concept and is set to underpin most of Audi’s future models from the A4 and up. Thanks to a combination of ultra-high strength steel, aluminium and composites, the B9-gen A4 models are touted to possess a 100-kilogramme weight reduction over the outgoing models.
Under the bonnet, the B9 Audi A4 Avant will most definitely offer the same engine options as that of the sedan variant. As a result, expect an all-new 2.0 litre TFSI petrol engine to sit alongside a range of TFSI and TDI diesel mills. The US market is rumoured to receive a plug-in hybrid version while European customers might be able to get their hands on a CNG (compressed natural gas) or an all-electric e-tron version.
In typical Audi fashion, front-wheel drive will feature as standard on entry-level models while quattro all-wheel drive will be offered as a cost option and come as standard on higher-end variants. A six-speed manual transmission will be offered alongside a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
