Jaguar Land Rover to develop pothole-avoiding tech

jaguar-land-rover-pothole-alert-research

Not content with developing safety tech for cyclists and several other driver assistance platforms, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is now hard at work refining a system that is said to be able to detect and avoid potholes altogether. In its current state, the system is only capable of recognising a pothole and adjusting the suspension to deal the impending impact accordingly.

It does so by employing an array of sensors located underneath the vehicle to read the road surface ahead. The onboard systems then react by tuning the suspension setup should it pick up the presence of a pothole (or loose manhole cover). The next step, so says JLR, is to have the system detect and pilot the vehicle around a pothole – within the confines of the lane traversed, of course.

For it to work, the system would utilise a front-facing stereo digital camera to scan the road ahead and, should it be deemed necessary, slow the car down or even bring it to a complete stop depending on the severity of the projected impact. Additionally, said tech will enable the car to share information on the road ahead via cloud computing technology.

Also, an image and GPS location of the pothole will be uploaded and shared with the local authorities to help speed up repair works. Currently, JLR is working closely with the Coventry City Council to further augment development of said technology.

End up the Land Rover refuses to move because there are potholes EVERYWHERE until the owner has to disable the smart pothole evading feature

Yes, in Malaysia, especially KL, it is full of potholes. DBKL is so corrupted and dirty, they love to go and cari makan and fine people but got no time to mend the potholes.

If not potholes, there are broken longkang covers where your whole car and fall in. Once my whole wheel fell into a drain that had a broken besi cover.

That Public Idiot Phesal, he can build all the stupid things in KL, but important safety issues, he close his eyes.

In KL, most accidents happen because we swerve to avoid potholes. Whoii bodoh Phesal, buat apa bang?

Yep the Evoque needs this tech. It doesn’t absorb potholes properly especially on our local roads.

The Evoque does indeed ride quite hard for our Malaysian roads… If only MagneRide was standard, that would be a blessing… On the other hand the Macan with Air Suspension icw PASM is quite cushy and nice for our roads….

Though BMW does have a somewhat similar tech called Dynamic Damper Control, so essentially what happens is that you end up having quite nice ride, in the sense that when the front senses a pothole, it primes the rear suspension for more damping. The 528i in F10 form gets it, need to check about the 520d and 520i.

    Welcome to Malaysia…famous for the

1st class infrastructure (when first built)

3rd class mentality and maintenance (later)

Everything goes kaboom, collapsed, failed, etc.

–repeat process(with more money spent by the govt)–
