SPYSHOTS: Volkswagen Passat B8 sighted in Kerteh

passat-b8-0001

We now know that we’ll be seeing the new generation Volkswagen Passat B8 launched in Malaysia sometime in Q1 next year, but this is the first time other than the Das Auto event last year that we’re seeing the car on Malaysian roads.

These spyshots were posted by Daniel Liang in the VW Jetta Club Malaysia Facebook group sometime late yesterday. This black example was wearing Pahang trade plates, which makes sense as Volkswagen’s assembly line is there in DRB-Hicom’s Pekan plant.

The new Passat B8 sits on the new MQB platform. Wheelbase has been stretched to 2,791 mm. Occupants get to enjoy more leg- and headroom. Boot space is up as well to 586 litres, a 21 litre increment. Overall, the car is 2 mm shorter in terms of length, but 12 mm wider and sits 14 mm lower.

Five TSI petrol engines feature outputs ranging from 132 PS all the way up to 280 PS, while three TDI diesel engines produce between 150 PS and 240 PS.

A plug-in hybrid variant will also be on offer, combining a 156 PS 1.4 TSI engine and a 109 PS electric motor to produce 211 PS, a 0-100 km/h time of under eight seconds, a 210 km/h top speed, a 50 km all-electric range and a total range of over 1,000 km.

The new Passat can be specced pretty high, but a lot of the new equipment available is optional so it depends on Volkswagen Malaysia’s product and price positioning. It even has the option for a fully digital display that can show info like navigation maps just like the new Audi TT.

MQB means plenty of shared parts. Hopefully that means VW will stock plenty of spare parts in Malaysia so that warranty repairs can happen fast.

        • The Truth About DSG Lies on Jun 30, 2015 at 10:18 am

This is typical VW staff trying to discount the rumuors. For years, VGM staff came online and said the DSG issues were non existent and that those complaining were jealous and could not afford VW. Then VW AG admitted DSG faulty and cannot be used in hot countries.

Then VGM staff again came here and lied, said DSG issues resolved in 2013.

But until today, in 2015, DSG is still breaking down non stop.

What the VGM staff and VW fans fail to realize is this. VW is a damn good car. But only in cold countries. In hot countries like Malaysia, expect the car to break down continuously despite the DSG gearbox being changed completely several times. This is because the DSG cannot handle our weather and our jams.

VW AG is still using the same Borg Warner DSg in the new B8 Passat. It will be a great car in cold countries but expect it to breakdown continuously in Malaysia.

Yes, you are paying a whopping RM200k for a car that gives you headache after headache.

Please do not fool Malaysians Billy

Honest opinion,my jan 2014 polo gti 1.4tsi with 7speed dry clutch dsg still going strong without any issue at all..already 33k km. So i think, i can trust dsg again. Mix drive in kl heavy traffic jam, long distance maintaining abt 170+ to 200++ kmh on LPT2, without any problem. Trust me.

there is no long queue if you made appointment in advance. plus, vw already make a lot of improvement such as TSC, 4S dealership and all the new car models performance are highly improved.

Why come out with a new model when they can’t even take care of the old models? VW owners live in fear that their cars will breakdown and they will be given sh*t service by VGM and lose the use of their cars for months. VGM may have improved but only when compared to their horrible baseline. So instead of waiting 2 months for your car to be fixed now you wait one month. Until VGM can improve up to the level of Japanese marques buyers should stay away from VW cars. They obviously have enough defective cars to take car of at the moment. And stop lying that the DSG issue has been fixed because it hasn’t. If you use your VW as a weekend cruiser, fine but those who use their cars as a daily ride with traffic jam conditions still face DSG failures.

    • Actually this car has most of the features in the A4 B9. If they price it right, it could outsell the A4 considerably.

VW Malaysia should actually CKD the Golf TSi soon, only then they can ride along the benefits of MQB here.

Looks good, very wide looking car indeed. They should introduce the 2.0 TSI + DSG6 to go after the Mondeo.

As much as you like the 2.0l version, it will be more pricier than mondeo. Somemore the reliabilty of dsg is worrying against mondeo’s conventional auto gearbox.

Just another boring sedan. Lets be honest guys, any car that isn’t a sports car, is really just another uncle / auntie car. Trying to look for beauty in a sedan is like trying to look for good food in the frozen section in the supermarket.

Of course Jeremy Clarkson likes the car. Most Europeans love the car, its a given.VW normally uses the Passat as its technology test bed. What appears in this car later makes it way to Ford Mondeo’s, Vauxhall/Opel’s and Peugeot/Citreon’s. These are car companies that follow the lead set by VW in Europe.

Saw the exact same car in Kuala Terengganu yesterday, front looks impressive, however the rear one is still disappointing, albeit slight improvement from current stock. Used to drool german cars but now looking at Japanese car which is more reliable.
