The Americans went all out on this limited edition Mustang, and for good reason. It’s inspired by the Apollo space programmes which were considered to be one of America’s greatest technological achievements, according to one of Ford’s board of directors, Edsel B. Ford. What better way to commemorate that with its other great invention, considered to be the muscle car that started it all – the Ford Mustang.
The Ford Mustang Apollo Edition has a 5.0 litre V8 engine with a Ford Performance Supercharger under the hood, delivering 627 hp and a pretty massive 731 Nm of torque. Additionally, it has been fitted with a sports exhaust system, so we suspect this guy is quite the loudmouth.
The custom supercharger and X-pipe exhaust system are part of the Ford Performance Package, that also comes with lowered sports suspensions and six-piston Brembos with 21-inch Forgiato wheels.
On the exterior, the one-of-a-kind Mustang gets a white base paint with a black bonnet and two black racing stripes on its roof. The side mirrors are done-up in red, and in true American fashion, ‘USA’ decals stamped onto the front and side fenders.
On top of that, the Mustang gets a big carbon-fibre front splitter, rear diffuser and LED lights fitted underneath to symbolise “atmospheric re-entry” (that’s the fire that encapsulates a space pod as it enters into earth’s atmosphere at breakneck speeds – at least that’s what we see in the movies).
Inside, the seats receive a special white stripe and red stitchings that also have been applied to the steering wheel, plus white accents on the side, floor mats (with USA labels to boot) and sill plates with the wordings Apollo Editions. There are no rear seats, but instead you get a leather wrap that has a series of patches from the Apollo missions carried out through the years.
This one-off Ford Mustang will be put on auction at a charity event, the EAA Airventure 2015, where all proceeds will go into funding the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) youth education programmes. But Houston, we have problem, because you obviously won’t be able to get this limited edition in Malaysia. You can, however, get a standard-specced one here in Malaysia. As announced recently, the 2.3L EcoBoost model starts from RM435,000 on-the-road without insurance.
