Strategy 2018 seems to be right on track for the Volkswagen group – the German automaker has surpassed Toyota in terms of total vehicle deliveries in the first half of 2015. The numbers suggest that competition between Wolfsburg and its Japanese rival is expected to intensify for the remainder of the year.
Volkswagen – including sub-brands such as Scania and MAN – moved an accumulative total of 5.04 million vehicles worldwide, while Toyota (including Daihatsu and Hino) trailed slightly behind with 5.02 million vehicles delivered, a mere 20,000 vehicles separating the brands.
Bloomberg reports that Europe was one of the greatest contributors to Volkswagen’s achievement in the first six months of the year. The report adds that the boost in demand for automobiles in its own domestic market has helped cushion the impact from increasingly challenging markets such as China, Russia and some South American and South-East Asian countries.
The figures, however, are lower when compared to that for the corresponding period last year – the German automaker’s sales have fallen by 0.5% compared to first six months of 2014.
It was reported that the new Volkswagen Passat and the Porsche Macan helped the brand’s sales in Western Europe, boosting it by more than 6%, while Toyota’s market demand was propelled by the Lexus NX and the Toyota RAV4 compact SUV in the US.
Last year, Toyota took the honours as the world’s top automaker with total sales of 10.23 million units sold worldwide. Volkswagen finished second with 10.14 million, with General Motors in third with 9.92 million vehicles.
On the local front, Volkswagen has also managed higher figures for the first six months – the company registered an increase of 38.1% vehicles sold to date this year compared to the total number of vehicles sold for the first half of 2014.
Looking to sell your car? Sell it with Carro.
Since Subaru (Fuji Heavy Industry) is now part of Toyota, should Subaru’s sales number be included in Toyota’s?
Seems VW really doing well in China, Europe and other parts of the world.
They’re not a part of Toyota. Rather, they have a partnership with Toyota, so, no.
Toyota is the highest share holder of Fuji Heavy Industry now.
Subaru is made under Fuji Heavy Industry.
That doesn’t mean they’re a part of the Toyota group. Being a part of their group means having Toyota install their own management into their system.
Style over substance. That’s what the majority of the new generation wants.
Quantity over quality. That’s what VW offers.
How about making a reliable car, VW? Sick of your junks breaking down and causing traffic congestion.
Learn from the Japanese, please!
Sure you not mixing that up? I think people like me who bought korean car are the style over substance since our cars are nowhere near any of VW’s car in performance. O.o and yes im fine with my decision.
Reliability stories aside, I personally think VW buyers are substance over style since most of VW cars arent showy design wise. But they sure as hell perform ;)
Good show! That’s what I was thinking. VW is more substance over style.
I am sick of toyota junks vios and camry always skidding , crashing and causing traffic jam. Learn from the Europeans and provide better safety spec please!
VW got great styling?
What VW does is offer an expensive feeling car… Well put together (usually…), with decent handling and ride even at high speeds, easy to use. Also modern technology.
Plus there is nothing wrong with buying a manual VW. No DSG problems.
Sounds pretty much like substance over style to me.
And here comes the comments about DSG failure and VW cars stuck in workshops…you guys don’t need to say it. Save us the pain of reading them.
Well done to VW for the stepped up effort. The new Passat does look spectacular. Looking forward to Toyota’s return fire.
The strike back is gonna take place very soon. With a new model set to compete with the HR-V globally in progress, the new Hilux which is sold nearly every continent besides the US and a few others, a new Prius coming soon, the mighty Lexus RX (which could sell 100,000 units in the US alone) and also a series of refreshed models coming, Toyota is in good shape.
This really is major news actually..for so long GM was the one chasing the no1 spot,bt no one stays on top for too long in whatever industry you are in…
The real Quality of product, is not something u can see.
VW, Looks Good.. but it’s not good.
Cost Cutting at the place u cannot see or feel it.
Then, we got VW breakdown..
Bravo Volkswagen!!!
China likes Volkswagen brand…
I wondered why nobody care about Toyota RAV4 here.
Here = where?
The RAV4, as well as its Japan-bound twin, Vanguard, can be seen so commonly on Sabah roads. It’s a shame that UMW doesn’t bring it in to compete with the CRV, CX5 and Kuga.
Of course, with Toyota pay more to get safety concept.
I’m not surprised given the aggressive takeovers of various vehicle companies by the VW Group.
VW group – VW, seat, skoda, audi, porsche, bentley, bugatti.. MAN, scania, ducati
Toyota – toyota, lexus, scion, hino.
GM – chevrolet, holden, opel, vauxhal, buick, GMC, pontiac, hummer… No more.
Seems that toyota sold more per each brand under its portfolio. VW requires more brand to do the same
dude, how much Bugatti and bentley and possibly porsche can contribute to the numbers?
Time has once proved that Toyota vehicles was reliable and durable.
Now, perhaps once again, time will proved that Toyota vehicles are overpriced and overrated.

They solve whatever issue u dont realize.
Peace of mind? I think you mean REST IN PEACE. Even if you survive without VSC, the takata airbag is sure to kill you/ finish you off.
Lol Vios soft suspension issue got rectified ?
As long as its not a kimchi, it will have RV
Tipu. Gua punya Inspira value drop 50% in 3+ years.
Proton = Kimchi?
BS. The smaller and cheaper the car, the better it keeps its value. D segment, regardless of brand lose a lot of value.
Rubbish!!! My 2013 viva elite auto bought at 40k. Now trade in only 17k. I lost more than 50% in 2 years.
Lol, too many toyota salesmen here bringing up resolved issues and the old RV thing again. All sounding like broken records.
