A prototype of a mysterious Hyundai i20 has been spotted in Southern Spain, and reports suggest that it may be an i20 Turbo, which is being developed in the same vein the i30 Turbo is for the i30 range.
The reason for the speculation that this may be the turbocharged version is because it has a lower front spoiler lip and wears the same disguise as that worn by i30 Turbo prototypes. There’s speculation that the i20 Turbo is meant to fill the gap in the model range until more powerful and even more sport-focused N-models are introduced. This means that this car could try to rival the VW Polo GTI and Ford Fiesta ST.
The blown i20 will apparently have a detuned version of the turbocharged four-cylinder-engine with 186 hp that Hyundai already offers in the Veloster Turbo and i30 Turbo, and will probably churn out about 150 hp.
A variety of timelines are being bandied about, but it does seem that the introduction of this model is expected sometime in the autumn of this year, and pricing is expected to hover around the €16.000 (RM67,550) mark.
