The development of the Proton Iriz R3 touring car appears to be progressing – Proton Motorsports has released three new images of the little race car as the team scrambles to complete it in time for Round 4 of the Malaysian Championship Series (née Malaysian Super Series) on August 28 to 30.
Much has changed from the last time we’ve seen the car – the addition of the race-spec 1.6 litre naturally-aspirated Campro IAFM engine, a Forged Racing radiator, a dashboard, a Sparco removable steering wheel, a Recaro racing seat, a Tonnka floor-mounted three-pedal box and the familiar Iriz front fascia makes the touring car look much more track-ready.
To recap, the Iriz touring car – built according to 1,600 cc Malaysian Touring Car specifications for MCS – is claimed to push out as much as 190 hp (that’s 119 hp per litre without a turbo!), sent through a close-ratio five-speed manual transmission (probably the same dog-engagement unit as its Suprima S cousin) to the front wheels.
Other mouth-watering components include a six-point roll cage (as per regulations), Öhlins adjustable suspension and large Alcon disc brakes. Again, we can’t wait to see what it looks like!

to be able to produce 190bhp from a NA 1.6 engine is a great job though the standard spec engine is still producing lethargic performance
this show that r3 can really do it. but, i really wish some of the improvement for the engine will be passed to normal consumer. i.e. campro iafm with 120hp, cfe with 150hp. or maybe they can improve the fuel consumption instead. right now, r3 only do bumpers and stickers for us the normal people
The stock car is lethargic all because of the cvt gearbox. The manual variant does not suck at all. Proton`s cvt feels just like a scooter.
190bhp from an N.A 1.6l race prepped engine is quite respectable, although 15 years ago Super 1600 rally cars with same engine configuration produced around 30bhp-40bhp more..
The keyword here is “claimed”. Can or not still unknown like how they claim to be “BMW of Asia”
To be honest 190bhp from 1.6L NA engine today is no longer a big deal. But if it meet the euro6 emissions with this figure, I have no other choice to give them a big thumbs up!
Anyway #kipidap R3! I believe with your hard work, one day Malaysia can remove its’ excitation taxes!
Tengok lah….keluar Touring edition nanti…pun takkan laku…Tutup aje.lah
Better close moving coffins shop
dengan proton pun toyota, honda, mitsubishi, dan lain lain pun tak bleh menang.. malu lah wei
I notice the r3 branch plays quite a lot but have not sell anything much apart from some minimally customized cars and lame body kits.

I hope this can trickle down to a road legal version that we can buy. Lower weight, more power in N.A. form, and a 6 speed manual, and cost not more than RM80k.
hope that proton iriz will come with turbo kit..baru masyukkkk
