The roads have been closed, and Kuala Lumpur city centre is now in race mode. The KL City Grand Prix is happening this weekend, and the inaugural event will feature the one-make Lamborghini Super Trofeo Cup, Formula Masters and the KL GT City Cup, plus an Australian V8 Supercars exhibition run.

We paid the makeshift paddock (on Jalan Ampang, next to Zouk) a visit yesterday afternoon after a chat with Polestar, and besides the Volvo-owned tuner’s S60 racer, we managed to snap a few pics of the other race machines.

Seen here are the Holden Commodore VF (Red Bull), Ford Falcon FG (Pepsi Max), Nismo Nissan Altima (yes, a Teana race car!) and a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG (four pics below are from the Erebus Motorsport V8 Facebook page).

They run different V8 engines (Mercedes-Benz M159, Volvo’s Yamaha-developed B8444S, Nissan VK56DE) but all are built to V8 Supercar specifications, which means an estimated 635+ bhp; control MoTeC package including M190 ECU, Power Distribution Module, driver dash and control Albins ST6 six-speed sequential transaxle with integrated spool differential.

Performance is in the ballpark of 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and top speed of 300 km/h. The cars are stopped by AP Racing six-piston calipers gripping 395 mm ventilated discs in front and four-pot items with 355 mm discs at the back. The 18-inch forged wheels and Dunlop tyres are standard across the paddock.

Get used to the sight of these colourful big saloon race cars – V8 Supercars will return to KL next year for a proper championship round.

I’d rather see the V8 Supercars racing at Sepang. Hopefully that’s the case next year!

We should not be in race mode. Why be happy when our country has thieves and they are stealing billions and yet, that cannot even be sorted out?

This is one of the best categories to watch. I would say more competitive and definitely more exciting than F1.. love the V8 soundtrack as well. maybe not as technologically advanced like the DTM but the races have always been exciting

aussie V8’s definitely rule.. just saw them running in the wet.. crazy awesome, and they were pushing it as well.. wheel-spinning all the way up to 4th gear! I’ll watch this anyday over F1.
