The 2016 Lexus GS facelift has just been unveiled at Pebble Beach, during the Monterey Car Week. It’s quite a major update, both visually and under the skin.

Its signature spindle grille has been updated, and now features elegant satin chrome trim. The distinctive bi-LED headlight set-up first introduced on the high performance GS-F model has now been adopted for the standard GS range too. The same goes to the rear, which gets revised taillights and a new lower bumper.

Under the hood, Lexus’ 2.0 litre petrol engine finally makes its debut here, to form the new GS 200t model. This new base variant makes 241 hp and 350 Nm, and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission powering the rear wheels.

Further up the range, the naturally-aspirated GS 350’s 3.5 litre V6 now offers 311 hp and 380 Nm, up from 306 hp and 376 Nm from before. The GS 450h hybrid remains unchanged, with a 338 hp petrol hybrid set-up that can get to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds.

As before, an F Sport package can be specified on all variants, which features exclusive exterior and interior design add-ons, stiffer, track-tuned suspension and staggered tire sizes. The sport package offers Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system with Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) too.

Inside, the 12.3-inch central display screen now has a new full-width map capability, while the Remote Touch Interface controller gains new shortcut buttons and a more user friendly interface. A Siri Eyes Free Mode has been added for iPhone users too.

For the US, the Lexus Enform system gets some minor tweaks too. Owners would be pampered with the Lexus Enform Service Connect that together with the MyLexusandBeyond mobile app (for iOS devices) or LexusDrivers.com to set push-reminders and alerts for maintenance and service issues. Lexus Enform Remote, meanwhile, allows users to remotely view and control certain aspects of the GS that include remote door lock/unlock; remote start/stop for the engine and climate control; vehicle finder and guest driver monitor.

In terms of safety, the 2016 Lexus GS facelift gets the Lexus Safety System + which combines Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) with Steering Assist, Intelligent High Beam (IHB) and All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

That spindle looks like a gaping maw. Too bad they decided to adopt this as the corporate look.

I’m sure those designers endured countless sleepless nights until the very end…

looks ok for now , until a new 5 series and E class comes about…

    otherwise, that interior is glorious~!

People have already mentioned a million times, the GS doesn’t share the same chasis/platform or the mechanical with the camry. It’s not derived from the camry, but the Avalon. Clear enough?

Actually, the GS is not based on the Avalon. The ES is based on the Avalon. The GS only shares platform with the smaller Lexus IS. As far as I know, no Toyotas share a platform with the IS & GS. It was only the old IS/GS which shared platforms with the Toyota Mark X & Toyota Crown (both premium RWD Toyota products).

The pre-facelift GS already has an amazing interior – soft & thickly padded material or leather everywhere (including on top of the dash). This one just makes it even better.

The new thin 2.0 engine looks kinda small in the engine bay, but it still looks nice (though I doubt it will sound anywhere near as good as the old V6 with the sound generator thingy). Whats not so nice (for me anyway) is that DRL which is divorced from the main lights assembly and is instead on the bumper. I didn’t quite like it in the IS – but eventually it grew on me. Can’t wait to see the GS F Sport pictures, which should have an even more aggressive front design & more exciting rims.

Even with the new design and what not Lexus hasn’t really taken off well here especially when faced with the German trio

Agreed. It does have a striking look, but not one that will stand the test of time…….for that the Germans does it better.

Ever since Lexus took on the spindle concept, its initial position as an unpretentious eastern competitor replaced by a much classier Infinites.

The only reason it hasn’t taken off is due to the price. Lexus is considerably more expensive than any of the German offerings, mainly due to it being CBU.

It will definitely look better in person. I have doubts about the IS at first, but in person it looks good, especially in the metallic grey or whatever they call it.

In malaysia lexus is keen to attract those who want to make practical choices (no to bmw mercedes or audi – too many ‘problems’) but are keen to buy something upmarket (none of that honda accord stuff thank you very much). Unfortunately this group is small. At this market point its a lot to do with emotion and desire (which the german marques are very good at manipulating) and less with practicality.
