This is the Hyundai Grand i10 X, an attempt at SUV ruggedness by a city hatchback. It’s pretty much uses the same template as big brother i20 Active and the Volkswagen CrossPolo, but is smaller than the B-segment duo. Displayed at GIIAS 2015, the Grand i10 X was launched in Indonesia in June.
The X is based on the Grand i10 five-door hatch, with some SUV-inspired add ons. The car is underlined by black plastic, which covers the front lip, side skirts and wheel arches, plus rocker panels on the flanks. Hyundai has also added black stickers on the C-pillars to create the impression of a “floating roof”, as seen on the i20.
The centre section of the front and rear lower bumpers are painted in silver to mimic skid plates, while the fog lamp housings also include a strip of LED DRLs. Also in is a rear spoiler and 14-inch two-tone alloys. The show car’s Thule roof rack and rally-style white rims add an extra shot of ruggedness.
The Grand i10 X, like the regular hatch, is powered by a 1.25 litre Kappa engine with 87 PS and 120 Nm. But unlike the Grand i10, the X is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox. Four colours are offered – Golden Orange, Sleek Silver, Passion Red dan Pure White.
Toyota showed a concept in the same vein at GIIAS 2015 – the Yaris Heykers Concept.
