We’ve pretty much had a good idea of what the 2016 Hyundai Elantra – slated to debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November – would look like, thanks to a barrage of official rendering released over the past few weeks. Still, there’s nothing like seeing the actual car, and thanks to these leaked photos of the Korean C-segment sedan, we have!
Carrying the Korean-market Avante badge, the new car features an evolution of the current model’s organic styling, incorporating Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language. The slim almond-shaped headlights are reminiscent of those on the Jaguar XE, while the full-length six-point grille gives the front end a hint of Audi to it. L-shaped gloss black inserts on either corner house the fog lights.
The side profile is similar to that of the outgoing Elantra, but the surfacing is less exaggerated and more restrained. It’s the same story at the rear – the tail lights are slimmer and sleeker than the ones before it and feature three square light guides on each side, and the bumper gets a simpler Sonata-style design. It’s all a bit familiar though – doesn’t it remind you of a certain metropolitan-named B-segment sedan?
At least the interior is not so derivative – the bluff, upright design shares plenty with the new Sonata, with a high-mounted central display flanked by the centre air vents and audio and climate controls situated below. Unlike its larger sibling, however, the twin cupholders sit aft, rather than beside the gearlever. There’s a new three-spoke steering wheel, too.
Technical details remain almost non-existant, but it has been reported that along with the usual range of naturally-aspirated petrol engines, the new Elantra will also come with a new 1.6 litre turbocharged and direct-injected T-GDI engine producing around 175 hp, mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Fuel consumption is expected to be rated at 5.4 litres per 100 km.
