Frankfurt 2015: Infiniti Q30 compact hatch unveiled

Designed for a new generation of buyers who are not willing to be defined by their choice of vehicle body type, the Infiniti Q30 challenges convention with its bold character and daring shape. The car stays true to the signature design cues from the original 2013 concept and exemplifies Infiniti's design-led, customer-centric approach to product development. The unconventional stance and asymmetric interior contribute to an overall design that is certain to command attention.

Making a grand entrance at Frankfurt is the Infiniti Q30, billed as an active compact hatchback. The Sunderland-built Q30 will come in three variants: SE, Premium and Sport. A taller QX30 is also reportedly in the brand’s pipeline, according to Automotive News.

Exterior-wise, the Q30 features a double-arch grille with 3D mesh, while the fluid lines flow throughout the car. The Premium variant is distinguished by front LED fog lights, heated side mirrors that match the car’s colour, dual chrome exhaust tips and 18-inch alloy wheels.

The Sport variant gets a redesigned front bumper and a gloss black front grille, body-coloured side sills, alongside a rear bumper with chrome exhaust tips and 19-inch alloy wheels. The Q30 Sport sits 15 mm lower than both the taller SE base-model and Premium variants.

Inside, the Q30 consists of wavy shapes and dynamic lines, with soft materials applied to the door trims and centre armrest. If it looks rather familiar, it’s because it shares a lot of components with the Mercedes A/GLA-Class. In-cabin noise can be “cancelled” through a Active Noise Cancellation system that’s limited to the 2.2 litre diesel engine in Europe.

The Q30 features sport seats with integrated headrests, power lumbar support and an eight-way adjustment. As for the Sport, it comes with leather-wrapped flat-bottomed steering wheel, aluminium pedals and footrest. Certain variants feature Active Sound Enhancement which gives off a better soundtrack when the driver accelerates.

All three come with an updated InTouch touchscreen infotainment system. In addition to that, Dinamica suede is used to fashion the roof-line and pillars. Interior trim choices include City Black upholstery with purple stitching, Cafe Teak brown and black and Gallery White with red accents.

Underpinning all variants is of course Mercedes-Benz’s Modular Front Architecture (MFA) platform. Ride-wise, the Q30 has specially tuned shock absorbers coupled with MacPherson front struts and a multi-link suspension for the rear. To give driver and passenger a more comfortable ride, bump shock and shock absorber rebound rates have also been tweaked.

Engine options for the Q30 include a Mercedes-sourced 1.6 litre petrol engine with 120 hp or 154 hp, 2.2 litre four-cylinder diesel with 168 hp and a Renault-sourced 1.5 litre diesel with 107 hp. The US, meanwhile, gets a Mercedes 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine that makes 208 hp. All can be paired with a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox, while a six-speed manual option is only available in Europe.

Tech listed for the Q30 are Automatic Park Assist with Around View Monitor and Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Forward Collision Warning with Forward Emergency braking, Auto High Beam Assist and a radar-assisted Intelligent Cruise Control. The Infiniti Q30 will be available in selected markets later this year, while the QX30 crossover is slated for an introduction in the second half of 2016.
