Tokyo 2015: Subaru Viziv Future Concept in the flesh

Subaru Viziv Future Tokyo 2015 6

Revealed earlier on, the Subaru Viziv Future Concept has just been revealed in the flesh at the ongoing 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. For those who are unaware, the Viziv in its name stands for ‘Vision for Innovation’ and points to the direction that Subaru will be heading down with its future lineup of cars.

If that’s the case according to Subaru, could we be looking at a rough idea of how the next-gen Subaru Forester might look like? Maybe, maybe not – though it has to be said that the three-door SUV does look pretty impressive in person. Up front, there’s the familiar-looking hexagonal grille which houses the Pleiades cluster badge. Said Subaru logo is now flanked by white ‘wings’ within the grille.

Elsewhere, C-shaped LED daytime running lights are to found embedded within the headlight assembly while honeycomb-style LED fog lamps are located below. Also, orange accents are featured rather heavily throughout the whole car with tangerine marks appearing on the front bumper, side mirrors, within the wheels, on the roof rails and within the rear bumper.

The cabin features typical concept car cues with angular shapes to be found scattered all over along with the same orange accents providing a dash of character inside. Of more interest is the fact that Subaru has decided to showcase its latest take on its very own EyeSight stereo camera and radar driving system.

Said system now sports vehicle-to-external communications and telematics. As such, the system can now boast improved monitoring capabilities around the car, allowing drivers to be more aware of pedestrians and/or cyclists as well as other obstacles. Also, automated driving capabilities as well as parking is available on the latest platform of Subaru’s EyeSight technology.

Under the bonnet, the Subaru Viziv Future Concept also previews the development of the marque’s hybrid powertrain. First seen in the Subaru XV Hybrid, the Viziv Future Concept is powered by a turbocharged 1.6 litre DIT flat-four petrol engine with 170 PS from the Subaru Levorg and an electric motor.

The former powers the front axle while the electric motor is solely responsible for powering the rear axle – such a layout negates the need for a propshaft which, in turn, allows for a flat floor and increased interior space. As mentioned earlier, could the Viziv Future Concept translate into a production version of the next-generation Subaru Forester? We hope so.

Comments

  • My wife loves her current Subaru XV. Driving in these wet days with occasional minor floods is not a problem for her. We already had plans to upgrade to a face-lifted Forester XT, but if the next-gen Forester XT looks as good as this Viziv then we just might wait for that instead…
