SPIED: Next-gen 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan testing

Subaru gave us a preview at what the next-generation Impreza will look like at the recent Tokyo Motor Show with the debut of its 5-Door Concept. The design cues seen on the concept is said to feature on both the sedan and hatchback versions of the next-gen Impreza. We’ve already seen spyshots of the hatchback undergoing testing and now, the sedan is spied for the very first time.

Like the earlier test mule of the new Subaru Impreza hatchback, the sedan version gets generous amounts of camouflage as well. However, both feature a similar front fascia with the concept’s thicker grille and slimmer headlights standing out through the camo.

The shape of the A-pillar also closely resembles that of the concept, and when viewed from the side, the small, nearly trapezoidal window near the C-pillar is also a nod to what was seen on the concept. However, what’s not seen on the test mule are the creases that run along the concept’s sides, replaced with a more conventional design and fitted with door handles (the concept had none).

At the back, the same taillight arrangement of the Impreza hatchback test mule can be seen on the sedan as well. The partially-exposed rear lights would most likely adopt a C-shaped design, but it is yet unknown to what degree it will resemble those on the concept.

The next-generation Subaru Impreza is scheduled to debut in 2017 and will form part of Fuji Heavy Industries’ Mid-Term Management Vision “Prominence 2020” strategic vehicle plan. No further details have been disclosed about the car pertaining to its platform, although it is said to adopt the new Subaru Global Platform.

The same can be said of the powertrain that will be utilised. Suggested candidates include the existing 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre naturally-aspirated flat-four engines, a turbocharged 1.6 litre boxer, or even a hybrid setup (like the current Sport Hybrid). Expect a manual gearbox or a Lineartronic CVT to be paired with the engines as well.
