Ford has a history of championship-winning rally cars going back decades, but for Ford fans, the RS – Rallye Sport – badge and heritage began in 1969, with the 17M RS. A year later, in 1970, Ford released the Escort RS1600 and the Capri RS2600. To commemorate the long history of the RS and ST cars, Ford has released a video of the cars in action across the years.
To say the fledging RS models were a success would be putting it mildly, as both amateur and professional drivers took the RS cars to overwhelming domination of racetracks and rally courses across Europe in the 1970s. The RS badge continued into the 80s with the RS Cosworths and RS200 carrying the torch into the 90s, while the Mondeo ST took Ford’s track racing into the new millennium.
Today, the Ford Focus carries on the RS heritage, powered by a 2.3 litre EcoBoost engine with 350 PS and 440 Nm of torque. The latest four-wheel drive machine gets from 0-100 km/h in 4.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 266 km/h. It has big shoes to fill, that’s for certain.
