2016 Mitsubishi Outlander – M’sian details revealed

2016 Mitsubishi Outlander teaser Malaysia-02

While we’ve already seen a Facebook teaser of the Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) has now released initial specifications of the new SUV on its local website.

The Outlander, to be launched here in its facelifted form, will get LED headlamps with daytime running lights, keyless operation/push-start ignition, an electric tailgate, a sunroof and 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels. In addition to that, the multi-select 4WD system (selectable via button on the centre console) is also fitted.

On top of that, the teaser details the SUV’s seven-seats, which we now know will be wrapped in leather. Lastly, the website elaborates that the Outlander will boast “best in-class cargo space.” Earlier, MMM revealed that Active Stability Control (ASC) will be available as well.

Safety-wise, the Malaysian-spec’d Outlander will feature seven airbags, hill-start assist, brake assist and ABS with EBD. Three colour options, including red metallic, white pearl and grey metallic will be some of the colours offered.

The Outlander SUV will sport a “Dynamic Shield” front face – the company’s latest design language. In Malaysia, the plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will not be available, but the 166 hp/219 Nm 2.4 litre MIVEC petrol unit will be featured, paired with a CVT.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Preview Roadshow will take place at the following locations:

  • Bangsar Shopping Centre on February 24-28
  • 1 Utama Shopping Centre, GF Rainforest Concourse on March 16-20
  • Queensbay Mall (Penang), Centre Court on March 3-6
  • Komtar JBCC (Johor Bahru), Centre Court on March 24-27

Nice spec sheet hopefully it comes with electric powered front seats too. Looking at the long kit list I’m not surprised if the price hovers around the 200k point to rival the incoming Ford Everest.

When the Proton fanboys (ah beng, john etc) can’t afford this fortuner, they PRETEND toyota doesn’t have comfortable, sporty and good safety car.
Why so expensive here? Go ask your beloved government lar!

It seems like the wrong engine choice. The PHEV would make it really stand out from the crowd. A turbo diesel would give it the torque to move such a big vehicle. The numbers on the petrol engine make it sound very weak conpared to the diesels.

Why Malaysia version got no turbo engine, Active safety features include Forward Collision Mitigation system, Blind Spot Warning system.

So disappointed, else this will be a good car to buy.

    • Hired this car in Australia and done about 1,000km, but it was a 2.0 unit, not 2.4. Glad that Malaysians are getting the larger engine because the former is seriously lagged of power. Crossing a busy junction is literally taking a leap of faith with the utterly slow acceleration.

The ride is comfortable and it is surprisingly quiet in the cabin. Low wind noise and road noise despite the 18 inch wheels and 225 wide rubber. Fuel economy is decent given its large footprint and small engine combination that constantly needs to work hard to haul the car and 4 adults onboard. The CVT is also of the much quieter and smoother side compared to that in the Lancer.

Funny enough, we were talking about when will this car be available in Malaysia just a week ago. With the 2.4 unit in place, I would say this is a very nice alternative to the overly common CRV and CX5. Just hope that MMM will price it right. In comparison, this spec is priced at AUD$44k down under (with a little bit extra such as adaptive cruise control and forward collision mitigation).
