Ford S-Max – second-gen debuts in Malaysia, RM235k

Ford S-Max 2nd gen B-3

Pricing for the second-generation Ford S-Max, which we posted a preview gallery of last week, has been formally announced – the CD539E is priced at RM234,988 on-the-road without insurance, which is a bit of a hike over the first-gen CD340 facelift previously sold here.

The new seven-seat MPV, which made its debut in Paris last year, measures in at 4,796 mm long, 1,916 mm wide and 1,655 mm tall, with a 2,849 mm-long wheelbase.

It’s available here only in a single engine guise, the 2.0 litre EcoBoost – the 240 PS and 345 Nm SCTi unit is essentially carried over unchanged from the CD340. The mill, which features auto start/stop, is paired with a SelectShift 6F35 six-speed auto transmission, the same as found in the local Mondeo, Kuga and upcoming Focus facelift.

The Malaysian S-Max is a Titanium spec model, and standard fit items include glare-free adaptive LED headlights with auto levelling, daytime running lights, cornering lamps, LED tail lights and automatic wipers.

Inside, kit includes an eight-inch TFT touchscreen infotainment system with SYNC 2, a nine-speaker Sony audio system with USB, iPod and Bluetooth connectability, a dual-zone electronic climate control system with rear AC vents, paddle shifters and an electronic parking brake.

Additionally, the S-Max comes with full micro-perforated leather seats, both front units being eight-way adjustable units – the front seats also have built in heating and cooling as well as a massage function, the latter selectable via the eight-inch touchscreen.

The MPV also features an electro-mechanical remote seat fold release function for second- and third-row seating, with the second-row seats being adjustable fore and aft. No mention of a hands-free tailgate feature as found in the Kuga, so that option looks to have been left out. Boot space in a five-seat configuration is 700 litres (to tonneau cover, 965 litres to roof); with the rearmost seats deployed, there’s 285 litres of volume.

Safety kit includes seven airbags (front, driver’s knee, side and curtain) as well ESC, roll stability control, EBD, TCS, hill launch assist and lane departure warning and assist (called lane keeping alert/aid, in this case). The S-Max also comes equipped with Isofix mounting points (second row only, across all three seats) and front/rear parking sensors.

Three exterior colours are available for the S-Max, which rides on 17-inch alloys and 235/55 series tyres and tips the scales at 1,748 kg, and these are Frozen White, Moondust Silver and Magnetic Grey.

How much does the Vellfire and Estima sell for? And those are outdated, empty vans. That were used as taxi in their previous life.

Don’t forget this van can go around corners, quickly, and has plenty of oomph.

What comparable car can you get for 150k? This is a D segment based van with 240 hp and plenty of equipment. The only comparable car is the VW Sharan, but that one is less sporty (more spacious though). Similar price.

FORD-S Max …. Ford Stupendous-Max pricing …. limited edition model

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 4 Thumb down 1
  • Most don’t know that many of the first generation cars for Ford and some other makes benefitted from a case-to-case basis approved tax holidays. This allowed the S-Max and Mondeo to be sold at just under or just above 200k. This was a measure MITI approved to kick start the car market for some segments. Now that they have done away with it, it may be tough to sell a Ford in Malaysia at that price.
The hope by manufacturers was that with the tax holidays, they sell more and the brand gets recognition.
This is a well-built car with strong reputation in Europe and a powerful engine to boot. But in perception-slanted Malaysia, a reconditioned Vellfire or Elgrand will be seen as the proper choice, even though the S-Max is brand new, with warranty and a well equipped car.
Sad, really. I enjoyed my 238HP Ecoboost Mondeo bought at RM188k.
